Pompeu Fabra és l’arquitecte de la codificació moderna de la llengua catalana: la seva proposta normativa ha esdevingut el model que guia la tasca prescriptiva actual. Però aquest paper de codificador és només una de les cares d’una personalitat molt més complexa, que comprèn les facetes de lingüista autodidacte, de docent i gestor universitari, i de ciutadà compromès amb el país.
