To Touch Or Not to Touch?
To Touch or Not to Touch? Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Noli me tangere is based on studies which were originally written for an interdisciplinary conference entitled Noli me tangere. Word - Image - Context. The book contains eight contributions by internationally recognized specialists in the areas of philosophy (Marc De Kesel), exegesis (Esther de Boer, Erika Mohri, Turid Karlsen Seim and Reimund Bieringer), art history (Lisa Marie Rafanelli and Victor Schmidt) and literature studies (Hedwig Schwall). The collection is unique in its focus on the Noli me tangere and in its interdisciplinary nature. The narrowness of its subject, namely the prohibition of touch by the risen Christ addressed to Mary Magdalene is counterbalanced by the broadness of methodologies and approaches which are used to treat the subject. The book mirrors the many ways in which interpreters have wrestled with the topics of touch and its prohibition in the interpretation of noli me tangere in John 20:17.
Practical Theology and the Interpretation of Crossing Boundaries
In October 2002 the Tilburg Professor of Practical Theology, Tjeu van Knippenberg, retired. In order to honour him as a bright scholar in the field of fundamental practical theology and pastoral care, 23 of his colleagues at Tilburg University and elsewhere (Nijmegen and Leuven) contributed to this festschrift. The Practice of Pastoral Care
Drawing on psychological, theological, and cultural studies on suffering, Carrie Doehring encourages counselors to view their ministry through trifocal lenses and include approaches that are premodern (apprehending God through religious rituals), modern (consulting rational and empirical sources), and postmodern (acknowledging the contextual nature of knowledge). Utilizing strategies from all three perspectives, Doehring describes the basic ingredients of a caregiving relationship, shows how to use the caregiver's life experience as a source of authority, and demonstrates how to develop the skill of listening and establish the actual relationship. She then explains the steps of psychological assessment, systemic assessment, and theological reflection, and finally she delineates the basic steps for plans of care: attending to the careseeker's safety, building trust, mourning losses, and reconnecting with the ordinariness of life.
Material Christianity
This collection of essays offers a series of rigorously focused art-historical, historical, and philosophical studies that examine ways in which materiality has posed and still poses a religious and cultural problem. The volume examines the material agency of objects, artifacts, and environments: art, ritual, pilgrimage, food, and philosophy. It studies the variable "senses” of materiality, the place of materiality in the formation of modern Western religion, and its role in Christianity’s dialogue with non-Western religions. The essays present new interpretations of religious rites and outlooks through the focus on their material components. They also suggest how material engagement theory - a new movement in cultural anthropology and archeology - may shed light on the cultural history of Christianity in medieval and early modern Europe and the Americas. It thus fills an important lacuna in the study of western religion by highlighting the longue durée, from the Middles Ages to the Modern Period, of a current dilemma, namely the divide between materialistic and what might broadly be called hermeneutical or cultural-critical approaches to religion and human subjectivity.
