Creating the Computer

The development of the first electronic digital computers in the 1940s signaled the beginning of a new and distinctive type of industry—an industry marked by competition through innovation, and by the large percentage of revenues spent on research and development. Written as a companion volume to Targeting the Computer: Government Support and International Competition, this comprehensive volume provides a new understanding to the complex forces that have shaped the computer industry during the past four decades. Kenneth Flamm identifies the origins of technologies important to the creation of computers and traces the roots of individual technologies to the specific research groups and prog...

Interactive Systems for Experimental Applied Mathematics is a collection of papers presented at the 1967 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Inc. Symposium on Interactive Systems for Experimental Mathematics, held in Washington, D.C. in conjunction with the ACM National Meeting. This book is organized into five parts encompassing 46 chapters. The opening part deals with the general criteria for interactive on-line systems that seem most important for the experimental solution of mathematical problems. This part specifically describes the AMTRAN, REDUCE, EASL, POSE, VENUS, and CHARYBDIS computer systems and languages. The next two parts cover the components of interactive systems, inclu...

The story of the man who instigated the work that led to the internet—and shifted our understanding of what computers could be. Behind every great revolution is a vision and behind perhaps the greatest revolution of our time, personal computing, is the vision of J.C.R. Licklider. He did not design the first personal computers or write the software that ran on them, nor was he involved in the legendary early companies that brought them to the forefront of our everyday experience. He was instead a relentless visionary that saw the potential of the way individuals could interact with computers and software. At a time when computers were a short step removed from mechanical data processors, Li...

The paper describes a heuristic scence description program. This program accepts as input a scene represented as a line drawing. Based on a set of known object models the program attempts to determine the identify and location of each object viewed. The most significant feature of the program is its ability to deal with imperfect input data. Also presented are some preliminary results concerning constraints in projections of planar-faced solids. It is shown that for a restricted class of projections, 4 points located in 3-space in addition to complete monocular information are sufficient to specify all the visible point locations precisely. Algorithms, Software and Hardware of Parallel Computers

Both algorithms and the software . and hardware of automatic computers have gone through a rapid development in the past 35 years. The dominant factor in this development was the advance in computer technology. Computer parameters were systematically improved through electron tubes, transistors and integrated circuits of ever-increasing integration density, which also influenced the development of new algorithms and programming methods. Some years ago the situation in computers development was that no additional enhancement of their performance could be achieved by increasing the speed of their logical elements, due to the physical barrier of the maximum transfer speed of electric signals. A...
