The Selected Works of Tertullian (Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus)

WE are accustomed, for the purpose of shortening argument, to lay down the rule against heretics of the lateness of their date. For in as far as by our rule, priority is given to the truth, which also foretold that there would be heresies, in so far must all later opinions be prejudged as heresies, being such as were, by the more ancient rule of truth, predicted as (one day) to happen. Now, the doctrine of Hermogenes has this taint of novelty. He is, in short, a man living in the world at the present time; by his very nature a heretic, and turbulent withal, who mistakes loquacity for eloquence, and supposes impudence to be firmness, and judges it to be the duty of a good conscience to speak ...

This second volume in a four book series of the writings of Tertullian focuses on the teachings of a heretic named Marcion. This work mainly shows the error of Marcion's theology and the gnostic basis of the teaching. Although we no longer have many of the original teachings of the first and second century Gnostics we are able to use works like this to try and piece them together. Tertullian was adamant in showing the error of the Gnostic way of using the Bible and adequately shows the heresy that lies within the fabric of Gnostic thought that made it so dangerous. Now in larger print!

Tertullian's Tract on the Prayer

This short book, besides what it may suggest of help in the way of godliness, gives an insight into the mind of a man of strong opinions who was not afraid to express them, as also into the life of a community some at least of whom were not indisposed to make experiments, however little their mentor is prepared to afford them encouragement. The time was soon to come when he, as a Montanist, was to try to enforce many new practices, on the ground that, ""Our Lord Jesus Christ said, 'I am the truth, ' not 'I am the custom.'"" -- From the introduction Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus was born at Carthage of heathen parentage probably about AD 160. Shortly after 190 he became a Christian. As a man of excellent education and a ready writer in both Greek and Latin, a practicing barrister also, skillful in the presentation of a case, he began at once to write in defense of the faith.

Ad Nationes and Ad Martyras (Complete)

ONE proof of that ignorance of yours, which condemns whilst it excuses your injustice, is at once apparent in the fact, that all who once shared in your ignorance and hatred (of the Christian religion), as soon as they have come to know it, leave off their hatred when they cease to be ignorant; nay more, they actually themselves become what they had hated, and take to hating what they had once been. Day after day, indeed, you groan over the increasing number of the Christians. Your constant cry is, that the state is beset (by us); that Christians are in your fields, in your camps, in your islands. You grieve over it as a calamity, that each sex, every age—in short, every rank—is passing ...

A second century theologian from Carthage, Tertullian was an important early Christian writer, who produced an extensive corpus of literature.
