The Banff NATO Summer School was held August 14-25, 1989 at the Banff Cen tre, Banff, Albert, Canada. This volume is the outgrowth of a conference devoted to William K. Clifford entitled, "New Trends in Geometrical and Topological Methods", which was held at the University of Madeira in July and August 1995. The aim of the conference was to bring together active workers in fields linked to Clifford's work and to foster the exchange of ideas between mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Divided into 6 one-day sessions, each session was devoted to a specific aspect of Clifford's work. This volume is an attempt to bring the Clifford legacy in a new perspective to a larger community of mathematicians and physicists. New concepts, ideas, and results stemming from Clifford's work are discussed. Containing papers presented or submitted to the conference, each article is self-contained.

Finite temperature field theory is playing an increasingly important role in our understanding of fundamental interactions. It is relevant to condensed matter physics, early universe cosmology, astrophysics, particle physics, nuclear physics and quantum optics.The proceedings of the Banff/CAP Summer School and Workshop comprise the outcome of the third international workshop hold on finite temperature field theory. The over 50 papers include five pedagogical lecture series given by well known experts in the field, as well as invited technical seminars and contributed talks.
During the last few years, considerable interest has been focused on the phase that waves accumulate when the equations governing the waves vary slowly. The recent flurry of activity was set off by a paper by Michael Berry, where it was found that the adiabatic evolution of energy eigenfunctions in quantum mechanics contains a phase of geometric origin (now known as ?Berry's phase?) in addition to the usual dynamical phase derived from Schrdinger's equation. This observation, though basically elementary, seems to be quite profound. Phases with similar mathematical origins have been identified and found to be important in a startling variety of physical contexts, ranging from nuclear magnetic resonance and low-Reynolds number hydrodynamics to quantum field theory. This volume is a collection of original papers and reprints, with commentary, on the subject.
This volume is a compilation of works which, taken together, give a complete and consistent presentation of instanton calculus in non-Abelian gauge theories, as it exists now. Some of the papers reproduced are instanton classics. Among other things, they show from a historical perspective how the instanton solution has been found, the motivation behind it and how the physical meaning of instantons has been revealed. Other papers are devoted to different aspects of instanton formalism including instantons in supersymmetric gauge theories. A few unsolved problems associated with instantons are described in great detail. The papers are organized into several sections that are linked both logically and historically, accompanied by extensive comments.
