Serbia

This is the first in-depth, English-language history of modern Serbia in nearly half a century. It covers the period from the Serbian state’s revolutionary rebirth in the early nineteenth century, under the rebel leaders Karađorđe Petrović and Miloš Obrenović; its turbulent history of wars, uprisings and dynastic rivalries; the triumph of Yugoslav unification in 1918; and the catastrophe of occupation by Nazi Germany in 1941. It shows how the birth of the modern nation-state involved the creation of a new elite—dynasty, army and bureaucracy—whose rule over the peasantry generated a popular resistance that would ultimately take form in Nikola Pašić’s mighty People’s Radical P...

This is a study of the early writings of Virginio Gayda (1885-1944), a talented but amoral Italian journalist whose career spanned two world wars. A keen observer, prolific writer and propagandist during his stint as the newspaper La Stampa’s special correspondent in Habsburg Vienna, Gayda lent his considerable skills to promote an aggressive foreign policy. No one did more than he to poison relations between the Italian and Yugoslav peoples. His is the story of a respected journalist who chose an ultranationalist path to fascism and international fame. Not uninfluenced by rank careerism and material reward he forsook his roots to embrace the antisemitic “race” laws of 1938 and Italy’s disastrous partnership with Nazi Germany.

The Concept of Fluidity in the Baroque Age

  • Categories: Art

The Baroque world was a flowing one, a realm of slippery presences in constant flux. Everything seemed to be in endless motion –space, time, emotions and the individual itself. It was a deeply shifting world, and this absence of solidity and certainty would come to define both the macro and the microcosms of these inconstant times. Like other Baroque phenomena, fluidity encompassed a rather complex and wide-ranging set of manifestations – from the swirls of angels on the ceilings of Pietro da Cortona and the polyvalence of space in the complex interiors by Guarini, to the fluidity of being that marked equally the statues of Messerschmidt and Bernini’s Borghese mythologies. This book charts different aspects of this fluidity, discussing fluid geographies, fluidity of presence, fluidity of spaces and materials, fluid souls and water in Baroque culture.
