AfroLatinas and LatiNegras

AfroLatinas as a subject of scholarship are woefully underrepresented, and this edited volume, AfroLatinas and LatiNegras: Culture, Identity, and Struggle from an Intersectional Perspective, offers an important and timely intervention. The consistent attention to AfroLatinas’ agency across all the chapters is empowering and attentive to the difficult circumstances of asserting that agency, and to the tremendous breadth of what agency can look like. The authors argue for the analytical power of the concept of Intersectionality while considering the hegemonic pressures on AfroLatinidad and the essentializing moves that an intersectional approach enables: evading, overthrowing, and resisting ...

Extended Play

In Extended Play, one of the country's most innovative music writers conducts a wide-ranging tour through the outer limits of contemporary music. Over the course of more than twenty-five portraits, interviews, and essays, John Corbett engages artists from lands as distant as Sweden, Siberia, and Saturn. With a special emphasis on African American and European improvisers, the book explores the famous and the little known, from John Cage and George Clinton to Anthony Braxton and Sun Ra. Employing approaches as diverse as the music he celebrates, Corbett illuminates the sound and theory of funk and rap, blues and jazz, contemporary classical, free improvisation, rock, and reggae. Using cultura...

This book aims to provide non-specialist healthcare practitioners with current, focused and objective information on the most common vascular diseases encountered in daily clinical practice. In day-to-day clinical practice many healthcare practitioners do not have a working knowledge of the most common vascular diseases that frequently arise in patient care. Some of these topics include: aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot, venous thromboembolism, cerebrovascular disease, aortic dissection, and acute limb ischemia. These commonly encountered vascular diseases are becoming public health issues due to their high morbidity and mortality as well as increasing healthcare costs. Since patients with vascular diseases are often referred to non-specialists, the general practitioner must know how to proper handle the most common vascular diseases encountered in daily clinical practice. For each disease the concept, epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis and treatment are described, followed by essential advice on what the non-specialist can do for the patient and when to refer the patient to a specialist.

Jimmy Page in Brazil

immy Page is still recognized as one of the most influential guitarists of all time and one of the most important rock composers worldwide. And Page's relationship with Brazil is old: in addition to having starred in many meetings with national music stars, the Led Zeppelin guitarist spent seasons in Bahia and inaugurated Casa Jimmy to house homeless youth in the capital of Rio de Janeiro – which earns him the title of Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro. This intense story is the theme of Jimmy Page in Brazil, a bilingual book (Portuguese / English) by journalist and musician Leandro Souto Maior. The book has a preface by Ed Motta, one of the greatest collectors and connoisseurs of Led Zeppelin's work in Brazil, and postscript by young guitarist Sebastião Reis, the son of musician Nando Reis, what confirms that the band has crossed generations. The layout and cover bear the signature of Tomás Paoni, the artistic director of the project. The cover photo is by Marcos Hermes, a great photographer in the Brazilian music market. The edition is signed by Chris Fuscaldo, director of Garota FM Books.

The End of Democracy

The End of Democracy

Gilberto Lopes, with this profound and provocative study based on an ingenious imaginary dialogue between Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) and Karl Marx (1818-1883) on democracy, presents us with a disturbing work on one of the most important debates in today's political world. This work arises from a practical concern, from a life experience and a political restlessness, but also from a theoretical curiosity to make a journey inspired by the work of these two great thinkers who approached the history of their time with particular acuity and erudition. The relevance of the approaches presented here is evident as we face, day by day, the challenges that the "democracy" of today's world must confront: growing inequality, greater concentration of wealth, absurd wars and ever deeper and more widespread environmental deterioration. Faced with the state of political and economic confusion that reigns everywhere, Gilberto Lopes proposes, in a renewed and necessary debate on democracy and socialism, to glimpse the signs of progress on the road to equality suggested by Tocqueville as the great engine of history. This book aims to help us successfully reach the end of that road.
