The Rise and Fall of the Oil Nation Venezuela
This book explains why Venezuela is so rich in natural resources—it has been producing oil since 1922 and harbors the largest oil reserves in the world—and yet it is also a failed nation of class-divided citizens exhibiting deep poverty in a corrupt, incompetent state. Venezuela is a bipolar nation, where two marked poles in the society exist which have historical origins and are mutually exclusive. The book provides a critical analysis of Venezuela's history, economy and politics and explains the context and implications of the bipolar poles, known as the elite pole and the resentful pole. Both, it shows, have done serious harm to Venezuela’s prosperity. The author describes the vicious circle of oil wealth, corruption, inefficiency and world market dependency and gives recommendations for a better future.

Orogenic Andesites and Crustal Growth
Orogenic andesites have long intrigued scientists because of their remarkable compositional similarities to the continental crust. The significance of orogenic andesites as proxies to continental crust formation has been recognized for over 30 years, but no consensus model of andesite genesis exists. Much of the controversy revolves around whether orogenic andesites are primary mantle melts of slab and mantle materials, or instead evolve from basaltic mantle melts at shallower crustal levels. In three sections, this book provides an overview of andesite genesis at convergent margins that focuses on the slab–mantle interaction, crustal processing and andesite evolution through the life of volcanic arcs. Without favouring a particular view, the books aims to engender cross-fertilization and discussion that will smooth the pathway towards a holistic communal model of andesite petrogenesis and its role within the broader geochemical cycles of the Earth.

A Micro-Based Model for World Oil Market
In this paper, we study the supply-demand drivers of the price of oil over the last two decades. We address the problem of endogeneity using a novel SVAR approach, which allows us to incorporate technological restrictions that occur at the micro level in the production of crude oil to solve the identification problem in a reduced form regression analysis that seeks to disentangle the drivers of oil prices. We explore the relationships between oil prices, rig counts, oil production and an index of world economic activity, and provide results for a heterogeneous set of countries. We find that when oil prices peaked in mid-2008 reaching almost US$150 compared to US$14 in 1998, a large proportion of the price move can be explained through a purely demand and supply factors.
