Born On A Blue Day

A journey into one of the most fascinating minds alive today—guided by the owner himself. Bestselling author Daniel Tammet (Thinking in Numbers) is virtually unique among people who have severe autistic disorders in that he is capable of living a fully independent life and able to explain what is happening inside his head. He sees numbers as shapes, colors, and textures, and he can perform extraordinary calculations in his head. He can learn to speak new languages fluently, from scratch, in a week. In 2004, he memorized and recited more than 22,000 digits of pi, setting a record. He has savant syndrome, an extremely rare condition that gives him the most unimaginable mental powers, much like those portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the film Rain Man. Fascinating and inspiring, Born on a Blue Day explores what it’s like to be special and gives us an insight into what makes us all human—our minds.

A secluded country house. A rogue Anglican Priest. Ceremonial sex and mislaid fortunes. This is the almost-forgotten story of Victorian Britain's strangest religious sect and its wealthy, mostly female, followers who believed they could ascend directly to heaven. Henry James Prince was a rogue Anglican Priest with a flare for the dramatic, and the founder of the Agapemone, or 'Abode of Love'. He also claimed to be the immortal conduit of The Holy Spirit and purportedly engaged in free love and ceremonial sex with his mostly female followers. But Prince's eventual death didn't mark the end of this strange set... he was promptly replaced by another. John Hugh Smyth-Pigott - otherwise known as ...

3VOLVE is a photo-poetic prospectus suggesting Man's responsibility to shape social evolution away from the habits of the Information Age, to better communicate, to touch and be touched. Introduced by a visit to the French Embassy of New York after years lived in Paris, fast-forwarded to relocation in Reims, France - setting the backdrop for Metzger's first exposure as a contemporary poet in-love, through a whirlwind of contemplation to sudden life change, paused by a spirit altering road trip across Ireland, twice, and ending with a graceful bow of gratitude in Paris. 3VOLVE displays Metzger's ability to dig profoundly into social, political and existentialist philosophies, to question and adjust readers' perspective by providing alternative viewpoints. Sensitively reading human emotion while highly conscious of her environment, Metzger prolongs moments, inhales existence, then writes in deep, steady exhales which are meditative, sensual and intim

New Religious Movements in Modern Asian History

This book provides evidence that the emergence of Asian new religious movements (NRMs) was predominantly the result of anti-colonial ideology from local religious groups or individuals. The contributors argue that when traditional religions were powerless to maintain their cultural heritage, the leadership of NRMs adduced alternative principles, and the new teachings of each NRM attracted the local people enough for them to change their beliefs. The contributors argue that, as a whole, the Asian new religious movements overall were very ardent and progressive in transmitting their new ideologies. The varied viewpoints in this volume attest to the consistent development of Asian NRMs from domestic and international dimensions by replacing old, traditional religions.

In the winter of 2012-13 and shortly after receiving her French residency, Metzger left a life she cultivated in Europe and many dreams behind. OUT TUO follows a five-year journey to recover those dreams, if not see them in a new light and from an altered, coming-of-age perspective. Now characteristic of the author, her Sixth Book of Poetry and Writings leans on existentialist thought to stress the idea of how, in fact, ?The only way out is through?, and while living in a land much more foreign than the America and Western Europe she left behind ? America, ten years later.
