Endoscopic mucosal resection is a new endotherapy technique that can avoid the need for open surgery in the treatment of many superficial gastrointestinal cancers. In this practical ‘how-to’ manual, experts in the field provide specific, technical guidance on all aspects of endoscopic mucosal resection relevant to therapeutic endoscopic practice. The book provides an in-depth analysis of the technique, including methods and particularities that are not usually reported in scientific articles. Each chapter includes a comprehensive literature analysis and is supported by detailed illustrations, tables and photographs.

This text is designed to present a comprehensive and state-of the-art approach to the current and future status of POEM. Sections address preliminary issues faced by surgeons and gastroenterologists who are interested in implementing this procedure into their treatment armamentarium. These areas include the evolution of the technique, training and credentialing, as well as tools and platforms commonly used for POEM. Subsequent chapters focus on specific disease processes, and future applications of the technique. Written by experts in POEM, Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) addresses patient selection, pre-operative considerations, technique, and avoiding complications. A brief editorial review of the existing literature addressing the particular topic follows in each section. The text concludes with chapters on emerging and future applications. Extensive endoscopic images and illustrations make this an interactive text for General Surgeons, Surgical Endoscopists, Gastroenterologists, and associated sub-specialists.

Understanding and researching professional practice is crucial both to enhancing the quality of professional learning and to improving professional education more generally. Yet professional practice remains something that is little known, theoretically and philosophically, despite a longstanding interest in what might be called the meta-field of professional practice, learning and education. The contributors to this book, drawn from fields such as education, allied health, psychology and business, explore different aspects of practice in the professions, professionalism, and research. This includes engaging with the burgeoning literature on practice theory and philosophy, including the incr...

Teacher Education Policy and Practice in Europe provides a critical overview of the current challenges facing teacher education policy and practice in Europe. Drawing on a wide range of contributions, the book demonstrates that in order for teachers to reassume their role as agents of change, it is crucial to create a vision of a future European teacher and promote active engagement in preparing children to live and act in a multicultural and increasingly changing world. The book suggests ways in which teachers could be prepared to meet and overcome the struggles they will encounter in the classroom, including recommendations for teacher education, which open up new possibilities for policy,...

Selection of the works of Hrotsvit, the first-known woman dramatist, containing legends, dramas, and epics. Hrotsvit of Gandersheim (c.935 - c.975), almost certainly of noble Saxon parentage, was a canoness of the Saxon imperial abbey of Gandersheim, living and working there during its time of greatest material prosperity and cultural and intellectual pre-eminence. Her importance cannot be overestimated: she is the first poet of Saxony; the first known dramatist of Christianity (indeed the first known woman dramatist of any time); and a woman displaying erudition and wit in an essentially patriarchal age, a female author in a literary field dominated by men who insisted on re-evaluating and redrawing the literary depiction of women. Discovered in the late fifteenth century, her extraordinary oeuvre, written in medieval Latin, comprises a wide variety of genres: eight legends, six dramas, and two epics, organised into three books. The present volume contains a selection of Hrotsvit's works in Englishtranslation, together with an interpretative essay, critical introduction, and scholarly apparatus. Professor KATHARINA WILSONteaches at the University of Georgia.
