This volume is a collection of verbal proceedings of debates of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe at the fourth part of the 2005 Ordinary Session (3-7 October 2005).The Assembly meets four times every year (January, April, June and October). The Parliamentary Assembly's publications include, among others, Adopted texts, Assembly documents, and Orders of the day and minutes of proceedings.
Values in Western Societies
The European Values Study is a large-scale, cross-national, and longitudinal survey research program on basic human values, initiated by the European Value Systems Study Group (EVSSG) in the late 1970s, at that time an informal grouping of academics. Now, it is carried on in the setting of a foundation, using the (abbreviated) name of the group European Values Study (EVS). The EVSSG aimed at designing and conducting a major empirical study of the moral and social values underlying European social and political institutions and governing conduct. A rich academic literature has now been created around the original survey, and numerous other works have made use of the findings.
The Anthem Companion to Robert Park
The Anthem Companion to Robert Park comes to terms with Robert Park’s legacy. This companion focuses largely on the work rather than the man, a major figure in American sociology during the first half of the past century, and encourages readers to consider the virtue of rethinking—and rereading—the much maligned and frequently misunderstood Park. Despite the fact that he wrote with exemplary clarity, Park’s work has often been ignored by contemporary sociologists. The contributions in this companion embrace no singular response to Park, but rather present a broad range of responses, generally appreciative but also critical.

A number of issues are discussed, including freedom of societies; the privatisation of belief, ethnicity, and globalisation; East-West relations; and institutional rehabilitation.
