Last Day in Paradise

Banjo Ortega, an old Mexican bandit who hates white people, and Rodney Slugger, a down on his luck white cowboy from Montana, are both men who know they are living relics of the old West. But they must hang onto what they are no matter the hardships. Banjo Ortega is 85 years old and scratches out a living on 80 acres of land in New Mexico that has been in his family for generations. William Cook, the new owner of the 167,000 acre Last Day in Paradise Ranch, wants Banjo's land for a subdivision and fences off a tiny trickle of water that Banjo and his ancestors used to water their few sheep. But Banjo will not sell. They must kill him. Rodney Slugger becomes the foreman of the Last Day in Paradise Ranch and meets Banjo when he has to fix the fence that Banjo keeps cutting so his sheep can drink. What first starts out as hatred slowly turns into a deep friendship. Together they fight the efforts of Mr. Cook and his gangsters to buy Banjo's land. This moving novel about the shrinking west, greed, love, devotion, and murder makes a statement that all mankind should have the right to live the way they choose and can work through their differences.

The Land

Crumbling Indian and Spanish ruins, lost gold and a modern ranch are all part of The Land where centuries of men and women have lived, loved, fought and died. It is a novel of their hopes, dreams of wealth and power, their lust and greed. Symbolic of what this piece of earth means is the spear point made by Silver Moon and cast aside to be found by each successive generation. The spear point fills each possessor with the vision of the past and these ghostly visions have a determining effect on the fate of those who hold it in their hands. In the end, it is this ancient spear point that saves the ranch and its owner from disaster. ROBERT K. SWISHER JR. has been a ranch foreman and a mountain guide. An individual who knows the outdoors and western history, he has successfully combined these interests in stories, poems and novels. He is also the author of “The Last Narrow Gauge Train Robbery,” “Fatal Destiny,” “Only Magic,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “How Far The Mountain” and “Last Day In Paradise,” all from Sunstone Press.

Private Detective Bob Roosevelt is an old hippie Vietnam vet, who is desperately trying to find the love of his life and his center, but every time love or even a glimpse of enlightenment is within Roosevelt's grasp he inadvertently stumbles into murder and utter chaos. Adding to Roosevelt's seemingly lack of luck, he has a lecherous and sarcastic guardian angel- that although duty bound to protect him - desperately wishes to be the guardian angel for a female rock star. You will laugh, chuckle, and scratch your head in utter amazement while trying to figure out who-done-it as gunrunners, kidnappers, crooked cops, a thief who can't find the money he stole, and a murderer do their best to outwit a not always bumbling Roosevelt and his not so helpful guardian angel. Who could have known what a lousy bowl of chili at a greasy road side cafe would lead to when all Roosevelt wanted to do was have a quick bite to eat before heading to Colorado to go trout fishing. Filled with zany and off-the-wall characters there has to be someone who tells the truth. Or is there? A sly and subtle look at our, often times, absurd modern life.

Private Detective Bob Roosevelt is once again searching for the love of his life and trying to find a place with no crime. Following a gut feeling he heads for Minnesota in the middle of December. His guardian angel informs Roosevelt, in not so nice words, most intelligent people go to Florida or Mexico in the winter and ice and snow will bring him nothing but grief and another broken heart. Ignoring good advice Roosevelt finds himself in the winter wonderland of Saint Ansgar, Minnesota. But, even before he can build a snowman, he stumbles smack dab into murder, a gambling ring, a coven of not so nice witches, a priest who likes good whiskey, a lady who has lost her heart, a little boy that desperately needs a friend, women that would rather see him dead than a love interest, and two gangsters that wish they were still in Kansas City shaking down Mom and Pop stores for protection money. A funny out of control snowmobile ride through murder and lost love with a cast of characters you will love but who your mother warned you about.

HOW BRIDGE McCOY LEARNED TO SAY I LOVE YOU is an off-center love story about a writer who walks two steps forward and one step backward, hates change, and when he tries to tell the woman he loves that he loves her, all he can say is "I, I, I, I, Lo, Lo, Lo....," and starts choking like there is a meatball stuck in his throat. Set is a weird little art town in New Mexico and filled with a cast of characters that stretch the imagination the novel is funny, snide, sarcastic, and profoundly touching. But most of all it is the truth - all the weird, sad, warm, truth. And, as it isn't always true in life, love wins for all - even the old buildings who did not want to come out of retirement and the vegetarian lampposts who decide eating a hamburger every so often is better than murder.

Grammar Nazis Are Not Always Rite, Right, Write is based on a fiction writing course I taught at a small university that repudiates, in both humorous and serious ways, what is considered by most writers to be proper and necessary for writing fiction. It is not a HOW-TO book. It is a book intended to help you find your own creative path, get rid of your fear over writing, and answer many questions that seem to haunt both novice and established writers. It covers grammar, punctuation, show don't tell, write what you know, and many other topics that in my opinion are unnecessary when writing fiction. It also explores many aspects of the modern writing business (both traditional and self-publish...
