Texas Almanac 2012–2013

First published in 1857, the Texas Almanac has a long history of chronicling the Lone Star State and its residents. Red State

In November 1960, the Democratic party dominated Texas. The newly elected vice president, Lyndon Johnson, was a Texan. Democrats held all thirty statewide elective positions. The state legislature had 181 Democrats and no Republicans or anyone else. Then fast forward fifty years to November 2010. Texas has not voted for a Democratic president since 1976. Every statewide elective office is held by Republicans. Representing Texas in Washington is a congressional delegation of twenty-five Republicans and nine Democrats. Republicans control the Texas Senate by a margin of nineteen to twelve and the Texas House of Representatives by 101 to 49. Red State explores why this transformation of Texas p...

Fermented Landscapes

Fermented Landscapes applies the concept of fermentation as a mechanism through which to understand and analyze processes of landscape change. This comprehensive conceptualization of “fermented landscapes” examines the excitement, unrest, and agitation evident across shifting physical-environmental and sociocultural landscapes as related to the production, distribution, and consumption of fermented products. This collection includes a variety of perspectives on wine, beer, and cider geographies, as well as the geography of other fermented products, considering the use of “local” materials in craft beverages as a function of neolocalism and sustainability and the nonhuman elements of fermentation. Investigating the environmental, economic, and sociocultural implications of fermentation in expected and unexpected places and ways allows for a complex study of rural-urban exchanges or metabolisms over time and space—an increasingly relevant endeavor in socially and environmentally challenged contexts, global and local.

An argument against the myth of "American exceptionalism" Endless Holocausts: Mass Death in the History of the United States Empire helps us to come to terms with what we have long suspected: the rise of the U.S. Empire has relied upon an almost unimaginable loss of life, from its inception during the European colonial period, to the present. And yet, in the face of a series of endless holocausts at home and abroad, the doctrine of American exceptionalism has plagued the globe for over a century. However much the ruling class insists on U.S. superiority, we find ourselves in the midst of a sea change. Perpetual wars, deteriorating economic conditions, the resurgence of white supremacy, and t...

Life is a collage of passing experiences. Your thoughts are just one more category of things you experience. You observe your thoughts just as you observe other objects. No one really sees anything rather they see only their thoughts projected outward as images. Life is a mirror that reflects with pristine openness a timeless clarity. Everything is an image looking back at you reflecting your inner beliefs. This book is for the seeker. The one who desires to know more than their current realities presentations. Use this book as a guide and reference. Religions, Philosophies, and Sciences regarding Fundamental Unity confirming Hermetic principles on Mentalism and the Law of Attraction are discussed. An in depth study on the Holy Light revealed in various cultures is explored. The author then guides the reader beyond the limitations of the thinking mind into Conscious Awareness. At the same time, you recognize that you are an image passing through eternity.

The Texas Hill Country is rich with history. In recent years revisionist historians have only written about a select few aspects of the region, apparently preferring to overlook the fact that outlaws, lawmen, Indians, horse soldiers and Spanish explorers crisscrossed the San Saba River and Menard County area for hundreds of years. True enough, the quaint shops and bistros, the music festivals, wildflowers, and the pleasing climate may be the attraction today but the area was home to Paleo-Indians 10,000 years ago. Spaniards trekked through the region in 1753, finding promise of gold and silver in the surrounding hills. Early Texas pioneers ultimately carved out a frontier settlement here, only to be menaced by hostile Comanche Indians, reluctant to release their hold on the region. Fort McKavett, the lonely outpost on the San Saba, played a vital part in the settlement of this area and in the rich military history of Texas. Join the author in rediscovering the fort, and Menard County.

Cowboys, Cops, Killers, and Ghosts

This Publication of the Texas Folklore Society has something for everyone. The first section features a good bit of occupational lore, including articles on cowboys—both legendary ones and the relatively unknown men who worked their trade day by day wherever they could. You’ll also find a unique, personal look at a famous outlaw and learn about a teacher’s passion for encouraging her students to discover their own family culture, as well as unusual weddings, somewhat questionable ways to fish, and one woman’s love affair with a bull. The backbone of the PTFS series has always been miscellanies—diverse examinations of the many types of lore found throughout Texas and the Southwest. ...

Reverberations of Racial Violence

Between 1910 and 1920, thousands of Mexican Americans and Mexican nationals were killed along the Texas border. The killers included strangers and neighbors, vigilantes and law enforcement officers—in particular, Texas Rangers. Despite a 1919 investigation of the state-sanctioned violence, no one in authority was ever held responsible. Reverberations of Racial Violence gathers fourteen essays on this dark chapter in American history. Contributors explore the impact of civil rights advocates, such as José Tomás Canales, the sole Mexican-American representative in the Texas State Legislature between 1905 and 1921. The investigation he spearheaded emerges as a historical touchstone, one in ...
