This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 13th International Conference on High Performance Computing in Computational Science, VECPAR 2018, held in São Pedro, Brazil, in September 2018. The 17 full papers and one short paper included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 32 submissions presented at the conference. The papers cover the following topics: heterogeneous systems, shared memory systems and GPUs, and techniques including domain decomposition, scheduling and load balancing, with a strong focus on computational science applications.
Winner, A Choice Outstanding Academic Book From 1964 until 1985, Brazil was ruled by a military regime that sanctioned the systematic use of torture in dealing with its political opponents. The catalog of what went on during that grim period was originally published in Portuguese as Brasil: Nunca Mais (Brazil: Never Again) in 1985. The volume was based on the official documentation kept by the very military that perpetrated the horrific acts. These extensive documents include military court proceedings of actual trials, secretly photocopied by lawyers associated with the Catholic Church and analyzed by a team of researchers. Their daring project—known as BNM for Brasil: Nunca Mais—compil...
WARNING ABOUT THIS BOOK: IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CRY, DON'T READ! It had been three days since she received that email. Three days in which she struggled between responding and pretending to ignore it. Three days in which she did nothing but think about what to write to come out victorious from an endless fight. On the fourth day, nothing else mattered: the sender was dead. Even if she were to respond to that email, her response would never be read. "Did he think of me before the end? I will never know. What would have happened if I had replied to that email? I will never know."

With essays by Ron Briley, Michael Ezra, Sarah K. Fields, Billy Hawkins, Jorge Iber, Kurt Kemper, Michael E. Lomax, Samuel O. Regalado, Richard Santillan, and Maureen Smith This anthology explores the intersection of race, ethnicity, and sports and analyzes the forces that shaped the African American and Latino sports experience in post-World War II America. Contributors reveal that sports often reinforced dominant ideas about race and racial supremacy but that at other times sports became a platform for addressing racial and social injustices. The African American sports experience represented the continuation of the ideas of Black Nationalism—racial solidarity, black empowerment, and a d...
