This book aims to study China's economic statecraft in the contemporary era in a comprehensive manner. It attempts to explore China's approaches to using its economic, trade, investment, and financial power for the pursuit of its political, security, and strategic interests at the regional and global levels. The volume addresses three major issue areas in particular. The first issue pertains to how Beijing has used its economic clout to protect what it perceives as its "core interests" in its external relations. Three cases are included: the Taiwan issue, human rights, and territorial dispute in the South China Sea. The second major area of inquiry focuses on how China has employed its economic power in its key bilateral relations, including relations with Japan, North Korea, the United States, and other states in the East Asian region. Travelling Models in African Conflict Management
Travelling Models offers a theoretical concept for comparative research on conflict management in Africa in processes of globalization: how is change in one place related to developments in other places? Why are certain issues that are important in one place taken up in other places, while others are not? The authors examine how the travel of models enact changes, particularly in African conflict situations, most often in unexpected ways. They look at what happens when a model has been put into practice at a conflict site, and they pay attention to the forms of social (re-)ordering resulting from this process. China’s Global Reach
China’s Global Reach looks at China’s emergence on the globe as a hegemonic power in the recent years. Moving beyond Volume I, this new volume empirically examines the most recent development of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the two most important initiatives launched by President Xi Jinping as China tries to emerge as a global power. The first part of the book presents an overview of geo-strategic development of the two initiatives. The second part examines domestic political dynamics, particularly Xinjiang as the core of BRI, in these two initiatives. The third part investigates the responses from the major foreign partners involved in the two initiatives, with a focus on the responses from India, African and Middle East countries. The chapters in this book were originally published in various issues of the Journal of Contemporary China.
