Richard Long
"In 1964-65 the nineteen-year-old Richard Long made his first sculptures out of doors in the gardens and parks of his home town of Bristol. Since then Long has achieved international recognition as one of a handful of artists who have changed the course of modern aesthetics by returning art to life. Long works with nature, but he is not a painter of landscape. A work by him may be a photograph, or a map, or a text, or a sculpture on the ground. It may involve a precisely structured walk, or the making of a universal, geometric mark from natural elements - sticks, stones, water or mud. His position is that the artist has always been the mediator between man and his surroundings, and his concern is to reveal truths of this relationship."--BOOK COVER.
David Salle
David Salle (born in 1952) is an American painter and leading contemporary figurative artist. His paintings and drawings comprise what appear to be randomly juxtaposed images, or images painted and drawn on top of each other with deliberately clumsy paint handling. This volume is a partial portfolio of his work shown in exhibitions held in New York and the Netherlands in 1992.
Karel Appel
No discussion of postwar Dutch art--or postwar European art--is complete without mentioning Karel Appel, whom many consider Holland's most important painter. Appel attended the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam from 1940 to 1943, and then bided his time painting landscapes and portraits in an era when artists were forbidden to buy materials or exhibit unless they joined the German "Chamber of Culture." After the liberation, as reproductions of works by Picasso and others began to find their way to Holland, Appel rebelled against his studio training, founded several avant garde groups (including Cobra), and then moved to Paris. Years of travel and experimentation with subjects, colors and materials, left him with a close relationship to the American art community and studios all over the world. Appel is a sculptor and a ceramist, too, but he is above all an expressionist, a man of passion led by spontaneity, who has conversely made a lasting mark.
The Collection
"The Collections" is the official catalogue of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is housed in Turin's Rivoli Castle. This castle was commissioned in 1718 by the king of Italy and has been home to the Museum's splendid contemporary collection since 1984. Some of the artists represented are Carla Accardi, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Lucio Fontana, Richard Long, Claes Oldenburg, Tony Cragg and James Lee Byars. Each reproduced work is accompanied by biographical information that situates each artist historically.
