The Stats Revolution

Ted Hopkins achieved the ultimate in Australian Football when he played a starring role in Carlton's 1970 premiership. As a football statistician, Hopkins was not the first to accumulate the numbers that drive the AFL game, but he is the first to treat statistics as the first part of the equation - statistics, according to Hopkins, are the starting point to understanding how the game is played.

The Brownlow

The Brownlow Medal is the most prized individual award in Australian Football. The medal, awarded to the League's fairest and best player, has a proud history ever since Geelong's 'Carji' Greeves was the inaugural recipient in 1924. THE BROWNLOW- A TRIBUTE TO THE GREATS OF AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL tells the story of every winner in a collection of essays and interviews, complemented by strong photography. There's Ivor Warne-Smith, who won the League's highest honour twice despite being gassed in World War I, there's Barry Round, the oldest winner at 31 years and 238 days, with 258 games experience, there's Jim Stynes, the Irish recruit who first heard about football in his late teens. Each member of this special family has a story to tell. This updated edition of THE BROWNLOW- A TRIBUTE TO THE GREATS OF AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL features interviews with all the Brownlow Medallists since 2003, including Collingwood legend Nathan Buckley, former Eagle-turned-Tiger Ben Cousins, and the most recent recipient of the award, Gary Ablett Jnr. There will also be a feature on the 2010 winner.

The book examines a period when football underwent a seismic and ineradicable change brought about by the determination of the Victorian Football League to wrest control of the game's development and destiny from the various state controlling bodies and the Australian Football Council. Whereas the VFL had initially been the first among equals, it gradually assumed the role of the sole and undisputed guardian of the code. The AFC, once football's ostensible national controlling body, became an irrelevance. Instead of a national sport with a national remit we ended up with an expanded VFL with a majority of Victorian member clubs supplemented by a token sprinkling of teams from interstate. Such teams were in most cases created from scratch and could in no way be said to derive directly from the states' unique and distinctive football traditions and culture. For some, it was a brave new world, but evolution does not inevitably entail improvement.

There is no greater prize in Australian team sport than the VFL/AFL premiership flag. Premiership players are forever recognised and their deeds of their teams long celebrated. This book, the first in a three-volume series, recounts in details the players, the officials, the matches and the other key events that shaped the premiership team every year. The Grand Finals themselves are also recounted in great detail while the key statistics for the premiership teams are also featured. This book covers Grand Finals from the period 1897-1938 and is the first volume in a series to provide a complete view of every premiership team in every year of Australia's elite football competition. Among the contributors are: Emma Quayle (The Age), Rohan Connolly (The Age), John Harms (The Footy Almanac), Paul Daffey (afl.com.au), Jim Main, Glenn McFarlane(Herald Sun), Michael Lovett (AFL Record) and Robert Pascoe.

Jock

Collingwood has won over 15 premierships and Jock McHale was in charge for eight of them, including the four consecutive flags from 1927-1930, a feat no club has ever matched. Author Glenn McFarlane examines the life and times of McHale, his impact on Collingwood and the game and what drove him during the 38 years he was in charge of the Magpies, a record for coaching tenure in football that is yet to be broken.

Extraordinary stories and recollections dominate this energetic glimpse into the hearts and minds of the die-hard fans of the Australian Football League. Based on interviews conducted with 50 football supporters, this account takes the roller-coaster ride through the passions of triumph and despair, mourning and melancholy, joy and fulfillment, and sacrifice and resurrection. With a keen ear, this study listens to the fans talk about the emotions associated with the game, how it gives meaning to their lives, and shows that football is much more than just a game.
