Life is full of choices, some thrust on us, others of our own making. Sometimes the consequences can mean the difference between life and death. DEAR ULI! is the story of trauma and resilience told through letters to Uli, sent alone to America at age 16, from his family in war-torn Europe. A treasured family collection of more than 750 letters narrates the lives of one German Jewish family, and their anguish, fear and optimism. In 1937, Uli left Berlin and arrived in New York City where he forged a new life for himself. On the other side of the world his twin sister, Isa, and their parents endured the oppressive Nazi regime that culminated with Kristallnacht and Papi’s imprisonment. He was among the fortunate who were released, only to face an uncertain and fraught future. The letters and documents evoke images of this family’s life and the world around them over the course of the war and beyond.
In the Old Testament we read God s word as it was spoken to his people Israel. Today, thousands of years later, we hear in these thirty-nine books his inspired and authoritative message for us. For those many modern readers who find the Old Testament to be strange and foreign soil, the NICOT series serves as an authoritative guide bridging the cultural gap between today s world and the world of ancient Israel. Each NICOT volume aims to help us hear God s word as clearly as possible. Scholars, pastors, and serious Bible s...
The joint enterprise between research in theoretical linguistics and the acquisition of phonology and morphology is the focus of this volume, which provides fresh data from Hebrew, evaluates old issues and addresses new ones. The volume includes articles on segmental phonology (vowel harmony and consonant harmony), prosodic phonology (the prosodic word, onsets and codas), and phonological errors in spelling. It attempts to bridge the gap between phonology and morphology with articles on the development of filler syllables and the effect of phonology on the development of verb inflection. It also addresses morphology, as well as the development of morphological specification and the assignment of gender in L2 Hebrew. The data are drawn from typically and atypically developing children, using longitudinal and cross-sectional experimental methods.
