Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations

Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations

This excellent introduction to hyperbolic differential equations is devoted to linear equations and symmetric systems, as well as conservation laws. The book is divided into two parts. The first, which is intuitive and easy to visualize, includes all aspects of the theory involving vector fields and integral curves; the second describes the wave equation and its perturbations for two- or three-space dimensions. Over 100 exercises are included, as well as "do it yourself" instructions for the proofs of many theorems. Only an understanding of differential calculus is required. Notes at the end of the self-contained chapters, as well as references at the end of the book, enable ease-of-use for both the student and the independent researcher.

Perfect Incompressible Fluids

Perfect Incompressible Fluids

An accessible and self-contained introduction to recent advances in fluid dynamics, this book provides an authoritative account of the Euler equations for a perfect incompressible fluid. The book begins with a derivation of the Euler equations from a variational principle. It then recalls the relations on vorticity and pressure and proposes various weak formulations. The book develops the key tools for analysis: the Littlewood-Paley theory, action of Fourier multipliers on L spaces, and partial differential calculus. These techniques are used to prove various recent results concerning vortex patches or sheets; the main results include the persistence of the smoothness of the boundary of a vortex patch, even if that smoothness allows singular points, and the existence of weak solutions of the vorticity sheet type. The text also presents properties of microlocal (analytic or Gevrey) regularity of the solutions of Euler equations and links such properties to the smoothness in time of the flow of the solution vector field.

Fourier Analysis and Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

Fourier Analysis and Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations

In recent years, the Fourier analysis methods have expereinced a growing interest in the study of partial differential equations. In particular, those techniques based on the Littlewood-Paley decomposition have proved to be very efficient for the study of evolution equations. The present book aims at presenting self-contained, state- of- the- art models of those techniques with applications to different classes of partial differential equations: transport, heat, wave and Schrödinger equations. It also offers more sophisticated models originating from fluid mechanics (in particular the incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations) or general relativity. It is either directed to anyone with a good undergraduate level of knowledge in analysis or useful for experts who are eager to know the benefit that one might gain from Fourier analysis when dealing with nonlinear partial differential equations.

New Trends in the Theory of Hyperbolic Equations

Presenting several developments in the theory of hyperbolic equations, this book's contributions deal with questions of low regularity, critical growth, ill-posedness, decay estimates for solutions of different non-linear hyperbolic models, and introduce new approaches based on microlocal methods.

Partial Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics

On March 17-19 and May 19-21,1995, analysis seminars were organized jointly at the universities of Copenhagen and Lund, under the heading "Danish-Swedish Analysis Seminar". The main topic was partial differen tial equations and related problems of mathematical physics. The lectures given are presented in this volume, some as short abstracts and some as quite complete expositions or survey papers. They span over a large vari ety of topics. The most frequently occurring theme is the use of microlocal analysis which is now important also in the study of non-linear differential equations although it originated entirely within the linear theory. Perhaps it is less surprising that microlocal analy...

Tools and Problems in Partial Differential Equations

This textbook offers a unique learning-by-doing introduction to the modern theory of partial differential equations. Through 65 fully solved problems, the book offers readers a fast but in-depth introduction to the field, covering advanced topics in microlocal analysis, including pseudo- and para-differential calculus, and the key classical equations, such as the Laplace, Schrödinger or Navier-Stokes equations. Essentially self-contained, the book begins with problems on the necessary tools from functional analysis, distributions, and the theory of functional spaces, and in each chapter the problems are preceded by a summary of the relevant results of the theory. Informed by the authors' extensive research experience and years of teaching, this book is for graduate students and researchers who wish to gain real working knowledge of the subject.

Carleman Inequalities

  • Publisher: Springer

Over the past 25 years, Carleman estimates have become an essential tool in several areas related to partial differential equations such as control theory, inverse problems, or fluid mechanics. This book provides a detailed exposition of the basic techniques of Carleman Inequalities, driven by applications to various questions of unique continuation. Beginning with an elementary introduction to the topic, including examples accessible to readers without prior knowledge of advanced mathematics, the book's first five chapters contain a thorough exposition of the most classical results, such as Calderón's and Hörmander's theorems. Later chapters explore a selection of results of the last four...
