Quantum Gravity

The unification between gravity and quantum field theory is one of the major problems in contemporary fundamental Physics. It exists for almost one century, but a final answer is yet to be found. Although string theory and loop quantum gravity have brought many answers to the quantum gravity problem, they also came with a large set of extra questions. In addition to these last two techniques, many other alternative theories have emerged along the decades. This book presents a series of selected chapters written by renowned authors. Each chapter treats gravity and its quantization through known and alternative techniques, aiming a deeper understanding on the quantum nature of gravity. Quantum Gravity is a book where the reader will find a fine collection of physical and mathematical concepts, an up to date research, about the challenging puzzle of quantum gravity.

Particle Production Spanning MeV and TeV Energies

Particle production is an important topic in nuclear and particle physics. At high energies, particle production is considered to proceed via parton branching and subsequent fragmentation into hadrons. The study of the dynamics of this process and the study of the structure of hadrons in the context of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) belong to the challenges of the standard model of elementary particle physics, requiring new, nonperturba tive approaches in field theory. Within a nucleus, many-body dynamics is important and particle production may be used to determine many features of a non-equilibrium quantum system at low or high temperatures. At this Advanced Study Institute the different asp...

Proceedings of the XXV International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics

"This book deals with the most recent achievements in the following areas of high energy physics: physics of e+e- collisions, lepton-nucleon scattering, relativistic heavy ion collisions (the quest for quark-gluon plasma), and multiparticle production. New experimental results from Tevatron, LEP, SPS and HERA and the theoretical progress in the aforementioned fields are presented."--Publisher's website.

Physics Beyond The Standard Model - Proceedings Of The Fifth International Wein Symposium (Wein '98)

WEIN '98 focussed on searches for physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles at low and medium energies, including theoretical studies in these areas. In addition, selected topics in the physics of the Standard Model, searches for new physics at high energy facilities, and topics in nuclear and particle astrophysics were discussed. The conference was mainly composed of plenary talks reviewing the present status of the field. The proceedings include written versions of these plenary talks plus several invited talks given at the parallel sessions covering specific topics that could not be included in the plenary sessions.

About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q...
