Papers from the March 1992 conference explore the importance of EFA and eicosanoids on living organisms. Organization is around five interrelated themes: examination of the biological function of docosahexaenoic acid at the fundamental level of molecular and cellular research; biosynthesis of PUFA in mammals; types of biological markers that can provide information about the adequacy of EFA intake; role that EFA and eicosanoids play in the development of disease states; and in the nutrition of the fetus and newly born infants, especially those born prematurely. This volume contains papers that were presented at HYP2006, the eleventh international Conference on Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics and Applications. This biennial series of conferences has become one of the most important international events in Applied Mathematics. As computers became more and more powerful, the interplay between theory, modeling, and numerical algorithms gained considerable impact, and the scope of HYP conferences expanded accordingly.
How can industry profit from the biochemical tricks of cold-adapted organisms? This book covers a range of aspects in this fascinating field, from genetic tools to environmental biotechnology.
Hyperbolic partial differential equations describe phenomena of material or wave transport in physics, biology and engineering, especially in the field of fluid mechanics. The mathematical theory of hyperbolic equations has recently made considerable progress. Accurate and efficient numerical schemes for computation have been and are being further developed. This two-volume set of conference proceedings contains about 100 refereed and carefully selected papers. The books are intended for researchers and graduate students in mathematics, science and engineering interested in the most recent results in theory and practice of hyperbolic problems. Applications touched in these proceedings concer...
This text presents the latest advances in supercritical fluid technology, biocatalysis, bioprocess engineering, and crop breeding. It offers an in-depth review of the most recent principles and approaches utilized in the development and design of lipids for cosmetic, industrial and pharmaceutical, and food products. Discussing a variety of lipid-active enzymes from animal, plant, fungal, and microbial sources, "Lipid Biotechnology" covers modern techniques in genetic engineering for the modification of conventional oilseed crops and biosynthetic pathways for cutin polymers, flavor volatiles, oxylipins, and terpenoid compounds. It chronicles the use of lipases and phospholipases in the creati...
Vols. for 1963- include as pt. 2 of the Jan. issue: Medical subject headings.
Isolated enzymes are known as useful for synthesising of complex molecules with more and more large scale applications in recent years. These six reviews show different steps in the development of enzymatic syntheses for useful compounds. Screening of novel enzymes, their biochemical characterisation as well as reaction engineering approaches in order to increase their performance are treated in three papers. Then the use of protein design as a tool for the directed improvement of reactivity and selectivity of biocatalysts is described in two reviews. The supply of sufficient quantities of biocatalysts must not be neglected: fluidized bed adsorption as an emerging technology for the simple and fast purification of biomolecules is presented in the light of its potential in large scale supply of enzyme catalysts.
Organophosphorus chemistry is an important discipline within organic chemistry. Phosphorus compounds, such as phosphines, trialkyl phosphites, phosphine oxides (chalcogenides), phosphonates, phosphinates and >P(O)H species, etc., may be important starting materials or intermediates in syntheses. Let us mention the Wittig reaction and the related transformations, the Arbuzov- and the Pudovik reactions, the Kabachnik–Fields condensation, the Hirao reaction, the Mitsunobu reaction, etc. Other reactions, e.g., homogeneous catalytic transformations or C-C coupling reactions involve P-ligands in transition metal (Pt, Pd, etc.) complex catalysts. The synthesis of chiral organophosphorus compounds...
Cholesterol is essential for normal cellular function. It is found in all cells of the body and is a major constituent of cell membranes. In addition, certain specialized tissues use cholesterol as the basic substrate for the synthesis of more complicated sterols such as bile acids and the steroid hormones. Like most lipids cholesterol has a very low solubility in water. Therefore, in order for these molecules to be transported be tween different organs of the body a series of lipid carriers known as lipoproteins has evolved. Over the last several years epidemiological evidence has accumulated suggest ing a strong relationship between the risk of atherosclerosis and high plasma concen tratio...
