Land and Lordship
Otto Brunner contends that prevailing notions of medieval social and constitutional history had been shaped by the nineteenth-century nation state and its "liberal" order. Whereas a sharp distinction between the public and the private might be appropriate to descriptions of contemporary society, such a dichotomy could not be projected back onto the Middle Ages. Focusing particularly on forms of lordship in late medieval Austria, Brunner found neither a "state" in the modern sense nor any distinction between the public and private spheres. Behind the apparent disorder of late medieval political life, however, Brunner discovered a coherent legal and constitutional order rooted in the the rights and obligations of noble lordship. In carefully reconstructing this order, Brunner's study weaves together social, legal, constitutional, and intellectual history.

In this elegant book Mack Walker not only provides the most complete available account of the expulsion but also makes a strikingly original contribution to historical method. He tells the story in five different ways: as an episode in the history of the Salzburg archbishopric, in the history of the Prussian state, in the confessional and constitutional life of the Holy Roman Empire, in the experience of the emigrants themselves, and in the legendry of German (especially Prussian) Protestantism. His unusual narrative method enables him to reveal, as perhaps no previous historian has done, the intricate inner workings of the Holy Roman Empire, where conflicting confessional, dynastic, political, and economic interests were held in constantly shifting balance. The exile of the Salzburg Protestants, Walker shows, satisfied all parties concerned - except possibly the migrants themselves.

The development of effective methodologies for the analysis of multi-temporal data is one of the most important and challenging issues that the remote sensing community will face in the coming years. Its importance and timeliness are directly related to the ever-increasing quantity of multi-temporal data provided by the numerous remote sensing satellites that orbit our planet. The synergistic use of multi-temporal remote sensing data and advanced analysis methodologies results in the possibility of solving complex problems related to the monitoring of the Earth's surface and atmosphere at different scales. However, the advances in the methodologies for the analysis of multi-temporal data have been significantly under-illuminated with respect to other remote sensing data analysis topics. In addition, the link between the end-users' needs and the scientific community needs to be strengthened.This volume of proceedings contains 43 contributions from researchers representing academia, industry and governmental organizations. The Alps
This book is a great general guide to all the skiing areas in the Alps. Better than any other book I looked at. One bone to pick: It doesn't include Verbier, Switzerland. The authors had to cut the book off somewhere, I guess. The book is paperback and small -- easy to carry with you while you travel. Since I was unfamiliar with the Alps, I referred to it often on my ski trip to Switzerland and France. It gave the perfect amount of background info to each location and then had good, concise sections re: where to eat, where to party and where to stay.
