The Man in the Arena: Surviving Multiple Myeloma Since 1992

James Bond's survival of multiple myeloma since 1992 is an amazing story of tenacity, hard work and good fortune. In this book Jim shares his and his caregiver wife's, Kathleen, approaches and experiences and difficulties. This book provides two acronyms Jim developed that summarize their approaches to surviving a deadly, incurable blood cancer. Multiple myeloma's average survival is about 5 years. There is no cure, yet. Jim primarily is treated in Cleveland at University Hospital's Seidman Cancer Center and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, with second opinions from Mayo Clinic and Mass. General doctors specializing in multiple myeloma. They continue to share their story, which they have done in over 30 US states, Washing DC at the National Academy of Science, and in Canada, Spain and Japan. They welcome opportunities to help other multiple myeloma patients and caregivers by sharing their experiences. They do not give medical or drug advice in their talks nor in this book. They live in greater Cleveland, Ohio and enjoy their 2 grown boys, their wives, and 3 grandchildren. Searching Jim's name and multiple myeloma provides much of their story and contact information.

This authoritative and challenging work explains this transformation in medical practice and remarkable shift in gender relations. By tracing the actual development and transmission of the new midwifery skills through the period, the book addresses both technological and feminist arguments of the period. The study is distinctive in treating childbirth as both a bodily ...

Landscape and Gender in the Novels of Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy

Examining a wide range of representations of physical, metaphorical, and dream landscapes in Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy, Eithne Henson explores the way in which gender attitudes are expressed, both in descriptions of landscape as the human body and in ideas of nature. Henson discusses the influence of eighteenth-century aesthetic theory, particularly on Brontë and Eliot, and argues that Ruskinian aesthetics, Darwinism, and other scientific preoccupations of an industrializing economy, changed constructions of landscape in the later nineteenth century. Henson examines the conventions of reading landscape, including the implied expectations of the reader, the question o...

Political Judgment

How are impressions about political candidates organized in memory? What is the nature of political group stereotypes? How do citizens make voting decisions? How do citizens formulate opinions about key issues and politics? The contributors to Political Judgment: Structure and Process reach answers to these questions that will substantially influence how the next generation of scholars working at the intersection of political science and sociology, and public opinion researchers more generally, go about their work.
