Chaffee (government, Saint Mary's College) uses a theoretical approach to investigate the connection between politics and economics in Brazil. He offers statistics and detailed case studies of the country's regimes in support of his hypothesis that economic growth in Brazil leads to changes that support the governmental regime. Topics include the country's perpetually high inflation, the New Republic's strategy of growth based on import substitution, Jose Sarney's efforts to restructure politics with a new constitution, and the Real Plan. Citizenship has been an ill-explored subject within Conservative Party studies. When this subject has been analysed, it is usually made by scholars of citizenship, more concerned with general overviews than understanding specific Conservative approaches to the concept. This book intends to fill this gap. Through a rigorous analysis of sources, the author explores how the Conservative Party contested the welfare model of citizenship and sought to recreate a new relationship between the individual, the state and civil society. Starting from Thatcher’s idea of ‘active citizenship’ and going through the analysis of John Major’s ‘Citizen’s Charter’ and David Cameron’s ‘Big Socie...
A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Until the Storm Passes reveals how Brazil's 1964–1985 military dictatorship contributed to its own demise by alienating the civilian political elites who initially helped bring it to power. Based on exhaustive research conducted in nearly twenty archives in five countries, as well as on oral histories with surviving politicians from the period, this book tells the surprising story of how the alternatingly self-interested and heroic resistance of the political class contributed decisively to Brazil's democratization. As they gradually turned against military rule, politicians began to embrace a political role for the masses that most of them would never have accepted in 1964, thus setting the stage for the breathtaking expansion of democracy that Brazil enjoyed over the next three decades.
Bolsonarismo: The Global Origins and Future of Brazil’s Far Right documents the rise of the far-right alliance that emerged in Brazil in 2020 around the figure of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Unlike a cohesive organization with uniform practices, Bolsonarismo is marked by fragmentation and a broad variety of ideologies. Fernando Brancoli delves deeply into how Bolsonarismo has developed a specific political orientation through its partnerships with other groups, practices, and subjectivities within Brazil, as well as internationally. Through interviews, archival research, and newly available public documents, this book presents a comprehensive and compelling portrait of the neo-evangel...
"This outstanding and well-researched volume is fundamental to understand the process and consequences of financialization in developing countries, a must-read book for all concerned. In particular, policymakers would do well to learn the lessons, from macroeconomic to social policies." ISABEL ORTIZ, Director Global Social Justice Program, Initiative for Policy Dialogue, former Director at the United Nations ILO and UNICEF "A financeirização surgiu com o capitalismo neoliberal.
