Manufacturing in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, 1500-1950
This book provides the first comprehensive history of manufacturing in the Ottoman Empire and its Turkish successor state. As the Ottoman Empire evolved, manufacturing underwent an unusual trajectory. Expansion in the sixteenth century gave way to transformation and adaptation after the Industrial Revolution. Then, in the earlier part of the twentieth century, modern Turkey's attempt at state-led industrialization became a model for many developing countries. Suraiya Faroqhi, Mehmet Genç, Donald Quataert, and Çag∑lar Keyder, experts on different phases of the manufacturing trajectory, provide here exceptional case studies of manufacturing activities in their social and political contexts, integrating first-hand research with surveys of the literature. The Ottoman Press (1908-1923) looks at Ottoman periodicals in the period after the Second Constitutional Revolution (1908) and the formation of the Turkish Republic (1923). It analyses the increased activity in the press following the revolution, legislation that was put in place to control the press, the financial aspects of running a publication, preventive censorship and the impact that the press could have on readers. There is also a chapter on the emergence and growth of the Ottoman press from 1831 until 1908, which helps readers to contextualize the post-revolution press.
Imagining Macedonia in the Age of Empire
During the tumultuous age of empire, Ottoman Macedonia became a blank canvas onto which Great Powers and neighboring states projected their aspirations, grievances, ambitions, and state-building endeavors. This manuscript aims to elucidate these constructs and imaginaries, employing a theoretical framework encompassing entangled history, post-colonial theory, and subaltern studies.
