The spread, functions and models of the New Englishes have become a dominant theme of the eighties. This volume addresses, specifically, the English used in Singapore in the private and public domains, particularly the school system. The topics covered include: an overview of earlier studies and attempts at codification; a consideration of whether the formal mode of written Singapore English should be standardised; the problems of pronounciation; etc. and specific lexico-grammatical problems which have proved to be ambiguous for those not familiar with Singapore English. Also included in this volume is the largest bibliography so far published on Singapore English with over 700 titles listed, thus providing an essential tool for any future research.

This volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of religious cultural exchanges around the Pacific in the period 1500-1900, relating these to economic and political developments and to the expansion of communication across the area. It brings together twenty-two pieces, from diaries of religious exiles and missionary field observations, to studies from a variety of academic disciplines, so enabling a multitude of voices to be heard. The articles are grouped in sections dealing with the Islamic period, the Iberian Catholic period, the Jewish diaspora, the Russian Orthodox church, the epoch of Protestant culture and finally Asian immigrant religions in the West; a substantial introduction contextualizes these chapters in terms of both historical and contemporary approaches.
A new edition of Moving Forward, which was first published a decade ago, in which Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad had presented a discourse on Malays in Malaysia and argued that the Malays had to move forward to survive and succeed in facing the new challenges of the 21st century. At the time, Nik Nazmi was (and still is) pushing for a more progressive paradigm where Malaysians are at ease with its diversity. The message of Moving Forward, then and now, remains: the Malays need to embrace democracy, progressive politics and diversity. This is the right thing to do as well as the only way to ensure the survival of the race, religion and country. In light of the recent political developments in Malaysia, Moving Forward is just as relevant today as it was in 2009. The text is largely the same as it was when first published. This new edition includes a new Introduction and a new Postscript to reflect on the book in light of the progress that Malaysians have achieved and the new challenges that they face today.
The contributors to this volume examine the aspects of the cultural associations, symbolic interpretations and emotional significance of the idea of empire and, to some extent, with the post-imperial consequences. Collectively and cumulatively, their view is that sport was an important instrument of imperial cultural association and subsequent cultural change, promoting at various times and in various places imperial unity, national identity, social reform, recreational development and post-imperial goodwill.
It has often been held that missions rode on the coattails of colonialism. In the case of the British administered island of Singapore, the pluriform missions of the Methodist missionaries demonstrated industry, innovation, and integrity, which in many ways question the charge of compromise and complicity between missions and colonialism. This historical survey presents the case that the Methodist missionaries collaborated with the colonial administration insofar where benefits might be gleaned from cooperation but were intuitively commandeered by a different commander-in-chief and whose primary motivation of love for the Lord, for the people, and for the land were objectively evident.
