The Sweet Breath of Life

Words and images come together in a collaboration between celebrated poet Ntozake Shange and an acclaimed group of photographers, to result in this stunning celebration of contemporary Black life in America. From the first publication of The Sweet Flypaper of Life by Langston Hughes and Roy DeCarava in 1967, to Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, collaborations between writers and photographers have been important in African American culture. These books examine the issues of identity and representation that have been so central to this group's efforts to thrive. The Kamoinge Workshop photographers who contributed their work to this inspiring collection consist of names that have appeared in The New York Times, National Geographic, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and more. Names such as Anthony Barboza, Adger W. Cowans, Ming Smith Murray, Beuford Smith, John Pinderhuges, and many others. The Workshop’s mission was a response from the bias portrayals of African Americans in the media. They sought to shed positive light on their subjects, as well as to demystify Black life in America. And The Sweet Breath of Life does exactly that.

"Advanced Tribology" is the proceedings of the 5th China International Symposium on Tribology (held every four years) and the 1st International Tribology Symposium of IFToMM, held in Beijing 24th-27th September 2008. It contains seven parts: lubrication; friction and wear; micro/nano-tribology; tribology of coatings, surface and interface; biotribology; tribo-chemistry; industry tribology. The book reflects the recent progress in the fields such as lubrication, friction and wear, coatings, and precision manufacture etc. in the world. The book is intended for researchers, engineers and graduate students in the field of tribology, lubrication, mechanical production and industrial design. The editors Jianbin Luo, Yonggang Meng, Tianmin Shao and Qian Zhao are all the professors at the State Key Lab of Tribology, Tsinghua University, Beijing.

Standing in the Need of Prayer

Striking photographs and powerful prayers drawn from the collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture span the broad spectrum of black religious traditions through the ages. From the darkest days on slave ships to the defiant times of the Civil Rights Movement, prayer has embodied the most intense expression of African and African-American spirituality. As Mrs. Coretta Scott King writes in her foreword to Standing in the Need of Prayer, "It is said that every prayer is heard and every prayer is answered in some way [and] I still believe that the millions of prayers spoken by African Americans from the Middle Passage on down to today have been heard by a righteous and lov...

Africans in Harlem

The untold story of African-born migrants and their vibrant African influence in Harlem. From the 1920s to the early 1960s, Harlem was the intellectual and cultural center of the Black world. The Harlem Renaissance movement brought together Black writers, artists, and musicians from different backgrounds who helped rethink the place of Black people in American society at a time of segregation and lack of recognition of their civil rights. But where is the story of African immigrants in Harlem’s most recent renaissance? Africans in Harlem examines the intellectual, artistic, and creative exchanges between Africa and New York dating back to the 1910s, a story that has not been fully told unt...

Modeling of Magnetic Particle Suspensions for Simulations

The main objective of the book is to highlight the modeling of magnetic particles with different shapes and magnetic properties, to provide graduate students and young researchers information on the theoretical aspects and actual techniques for the treatment of magnetic particles in particle-based simulations. In simulation, we focus on the Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics, Brownian dynamics, lattice Boltzmann and stochastic rotation dynamics (multi-particle collision dynamics) methods. The latter two simulation methods can simulate both the particle motion and the ambient flow field simultaneously. In general, specialized knowledge can only be obtained in an effective manner under the supervision of an expert. The present book is written to play such a role for readers who wish to develop the skill of modeling magnetic particles and develop a computer simulation program using their own ability. This book is therefore a self-learning book for graduate students and young researchers. Armed with this knowledge, readers are expected to be able to sufficiently enhance their skill for tackling any challenging problems they may encounter in future.

Photography Books Index III

  • Categories: Art

While the Internet is an important source for locating photographic images, there still are hundreds of photography books published each year for whose contents there is no external access. This second supplement to Photography Books Index addresses this need by analyzing important photographic anthologies that have been published since 1985. Accessing more than fifty photographic anthologies that are widely held in libraries across the country--along with images from two critical annual compilations, Best of Photojournalism and Graphis Annual--this book identifies photographs that record the history of our times. This reference guide provides an important index to contemporary as well as hi...

Observability

This book is about nonlinear observability. It provides a modern theory of observability based on a new paradigm borrowed from theoretical physics and the mathematical foundation of that paradigm. In the case of observability, this framework takes into account the group of invariance that is inherent to the concept of observability, allowing the reader to reach an intuitive derivation of significant results in the literature of control theory. The book provides a complete theory of observability and, consequently, the analytical solution of some open problems in control theory. Notably, it presents the first general analytic solution of the nonlinear unknown input observability (nonlinear UI...

A Variational Approach to Optimal Control of ODEs

  • Published: 2022-07-26

  • Publisher: SIAM

This self-contained book presents in a unified, systematic way the basic principles of optimal control governed by ODEs. Using a variational perspective, the author incorporates important restrictions like constraints for control and state, as well as the state system itself, into the equivalent variational reformulation of the problem. The fundamental issues of existence of optimal solutions, optimality conditions, and numerical approximation are then examined from this variational viewpoint. Inside, readers will find a unified approach to all the basic issues of optimal control, academic and real-world examples testing the book’s variational approach, and a rigorous treatment stressing ideas and arguments rather than the underlying mathematical formalism. A Variational Approach to Optimal Control of ODEs is mainly for applied analysts, applied mathematicians, and control engineers, but will also be helpful to other scientists and engineers who want to understand the basic principles of optimal control governed by ODEs. It requires no prerequisites in variational problems or expertise in numerical approximation. It can be used for a first course in optimal control.

Engineering systems are highly distributed collective systems that have humans in the loop. Engineering systems emphasize the potential of control and games beyond traditional applications. Game theory can be used to design incentives to obtain socially desirable behaviors on the part of the players, for example, a change in the consumption patterns on the part of the ?prosumers? (producers-consumers) or better redistribution of traffic. This unique book addresses the foundations of game theory, with an emphasis on the physical intuition behind the concepts, an analysis of design techniques, and a discussion of new trends in the study of cooperation and competition in large complex distributed systems.?

How do you fly an airplane from one point to another as fast as possible? What is the best way to administer a vaccine to fight the harmful effects of disease? What is the most efficient way to produce a chemical substance? This book presents practical methods for solving real optimal control problems such as these. Practical Methods for Optimal Control Using Nonlinear Programming, Third Edition focuses on the direct transcription method for optimal control. It features a summary of relevant material in constrained optimization, including nonlinear programming; discretization techniques appropriate for ordinary differential equations and differential-algebraic equations; and several exam...
