An iPhone uses eight rare earths for everything from its colored screen, to its speakers, to the miniaturization of the phone?s circuitry. On the periodic table rare earth elements comprise a set of seventeen chemical elements (the fifteen lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium). There would be no Pokémon Go without rare earths. Rare Earth Frontiers is a work of human geography. The contributors argue that rare earths are essential to the information technology revolution on which humans have come to depend for communication, commerce, and, increasingly, engage in conflict. They demonstrate that rare earths are a strategic commodity over which political actors will and do struggle for control.
Global Operations Sourcing Strategy
We report on a survey of global manufacturing sourcing decisions that were made by multi-national companies operating in China. Based on responses from Chinese managers, the survey explored explicit sourcing and technology company decisions. The analysis provided insights into what these firms are doing with respect to global sourcing and why they are doing so. Analysis of the responses also shed light on how these decisions were made. Our results tested the validity of various arguments that have been put forward to predict or explain the pattern of global sourcing shifts that is taking place. The key takeaways from this paper are 1) the observed pattern of decision making, which can be grouped into dominant flows, indicates that re-shoring to the developed economies is not happening on a large scale and that shifting in and out of and within China is occurring with direction and reasons dependent on the particular industry, and 2) insight into the fact that that firms are evaluating complex tradeoffs when making both technology and sourcing decisions and thus a single dominant driver, such as labor cost, does not adequately explain the observed patterns.
Product Design with the Triple Bottom Line
The triple bottom line, coined by the famed business writer John Elkington, consists of three elements - profit, people, and the planet. It maintains that companies should commit to focusing as much on environmental and social issues as they do on profits. This chapter reviews existing literature that focuses on the financial and environmental impacts of product design, and presents recent work to motivate research needs on the social impact of product design. It also includes a general demand model that can serve as a starting point for future researchers to develop methodologies to help companies address product design issues with the triple bottom line.
Bespoke Supply Chain Resilience
Recent research has documented that companies are pursuing a variety of strategies to enhance supply-chain resilience. This paper examines how managers actually think about resilience strategies, and then analyzes the relationship between operations, supply-chain characteristics, and the implemented strategies.We define a “Triple-P” framework that matches resilience strategies to supply-chain archetypes by examining Product, Partnership, and Process complexity based on interviews of senior supply-chain executives. These interviews revealed two major influencers of resilience strategy, i.e., Homogeneity of internal supply-chain processes and Integration with other actors in their end-to-end supply chains. We found that the supply chains have different resilience requirements, have different ways to achieve resilience (which we conceptualize as “bespoke supply-chain resilience”), and face different obstacles to resilience. This study aims at initiating a dialogue between supply-chain scholars and practitioners to support more research for developing an effective supply-chain resilience strategy.
Blind Queues
In many service settings, customers have to join the queue without being fully aware of the parameters of the service provider (for e.g., customers at check-out counters may not know the true service rate prior to joining). In such “blind queues”, customers make their joining/balking decisions based on the limited information about the service provider's operational parameters (from past service experiences, reviews, etc.), and queue lengths.
