Loss Data Analysis

This volume deals with two complementary topics. On one hand the book deals with the problem of determining the the probability distribution of a positive compound random variable, a problem which appears in the banking and insurance industries, in many areas of operational research and in reliability problems in the engineering sciences. On the other hand, the methodology proposed to solve such problems, which is based on an application of the maximum entropy method to invert the Laplace transform of the distributions, can be applied to many other problems. The book contains applications to a large variety of problems, including the problem of dependence of the sample data used to estimate ...

This book on the psychology of white collar criminals discusses various cases of financial crime, while also attempting to delve into the minds of the criminals in question. The literature on this topic is growing as it gains momentum in the scientific field, as a result of the extremely negative impact white collar crime has on its victims. Because there is considerable damage and vulnerability from these crimes, it is important to begin to classify them, and to understand the minds of those that commit these offenses. While the current literature is not extensive, this work provides a closer look into the various ethical and legal facets of financial crime, and helps to uncover the social, psychological and neurobiological factors that intersect in the minds of those criminals.

Density Reconstructions With Errors in the Data

The maximum entropy method was originally proposed as a variational technique to determine probability densities from the knowledge of a few expected values. The applications of the method beyond its original role in statistical physics are manifold. An interesting feature of the method is its potential to incorporate errors in the data. Here, we examine two possible ways of doing that. The two approaches have different intuitive interpretations, and one of them allows for error estimation. Our motivating example comes from the field of risk analysis, but the statement of the problem might as well come from any branch of applied sciences. We apply the methodology to a problem consisting of the determination of a probability density from a few values of its numerically-determined Laplace transform. This problem can be mapped onto a problem consisting of the determination of a probability density on [0, 1] from the knowledge of a few of its fractional moments up to some measurement errors stemming from insufficient data.

This paper deduces the optimal futures position for hedging joint price and production risks of a renewable Power Purchase Agreement. We develop static and dynamic closed-form and numerical copula-based hedging formulas and test the models employing exchange-traded electricity futures contracts and solar and wind PPA contract prices from California's CAISO area from 2009 to 2019. Electricity futures present a hedging effectiveness of 10% for solar PPAs. The tail risk of the hedged positions is 5% lower than the unhedged ones. In the case of wind PPAs, reductions in variance are 5%, whereas the decrease in the tail risk is 4%.

Probability Theory

This book is intended as an introduction to Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics for students in mathematics, the physical sciences, engineering, and related fields. It is based on the author’s 25 years of experience teaching probability and is squarely aimed at helping students overcome common difficulties in learning the subject. The focus of the book is an explanation of the theory, mainly by the use of many examples. Whenever possible, proofs of stated results are provided. All sections conclude with a short list of problems. The book also includes several optional sections on more advanced topics. This textbook would be ideal for use in a first course in Probability Theory. Contents: Probabilities Conditional Probabilities and Independence Random Variables and Their Distribution Operations on Random Variables Expected Value, Variance, and Covariance Normally Distributed Random Vectors Limit Theorems Introduction to Stochastic Processes Mathematical Statistics Appendix Bibliography Index

Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) play a significant role in deploying renewable energy, a crucial development to meet climate change challenges. Participants set the PPA price through opaque negotiation processes. We present novel, replicable, and transparent financial models to compute the PPA price. The models utilize closed-form formulas or numerical copulas. Using all utility-scale solar and wind PPA prices in the world's sixth-largest economy, California, from 2012 to 2020, with solar (wind), the copula model (closed-form) has a root mean squared relative error (RMSRE) of 9.20% (6.84%). Competing models based on production costs have an RMSRE of 33.83% and 27.43%, respectively.

This book combines theory and practice to analyze risk measurement from different points of view. The limitations of a model depend on the framework on which it has been built as well as specific assumptions, and risk managers need to be aware of these when assessing risks. The authors investigate the impact of these limitations, propose an alternative way of thinking that challenges traditional assumptions, and also provide novel solutions. Starting with the traditional Value at Risk (VaR) model and its limitations, the book discusses concepts like the expected shortfall, the spectral measure, the use of the spectrum, and the distortion risk measures from both a univariate and a multivariate perspective.
