Written with humour and insight, this informal memoir is a delightful celebration of the passions that have driven Simon Brown's life. Called to the Bar in 1961, he has enjoyed a distinguished career on the Bench (perhaps less so on the golf course!) and now sits in the House of Lords as a working crossbench peer.
Every artist has a dream project an enterprise that he or she has continuously taken up but never completed. Via archived notes and drafts, a retrospective reconstitution of such projects can serve as a key for better understanding the authors artistic corpus. The present study reaches out to the authorship of Paul Claudel, Jean Genet, and Federico Fellini. Claudel deferred and never completed the fourth segment of his Trilogie des Coufontaine. The only indication of the existence of this prospective fourth part of the theatre sequence is a brief entry in his Journal. In 1949, he began writing a third version of his first great work TĂȘte d'Or. Like the unfinished fourth section that was to ...
A story of a young man's return home to learn that he has not only inherited his father's genes but has found love with a long lost cousin.
In twelve plays for broadcasting at monthly intervals, Dorothy L. Sayers drew on material from all four Gospels, keeping the theme of Jesus of Nazareth's divine kingship in focus throughout, while locating him firmly in the social and political context of his time. The first half cover episodes that precede the final journey to Jerusalem and the latter half primarily deal with Passion Week themes. It is the simplicity and profundity of Jesus' words in the Fourth Gospel especially that Sayers drew on in her own writing for the "voice" of Jesus "on air." The plays gave her an opportunity to explore the many gospel characters surrounding Jesus, not least that of Judas. And beyond the utter sorrow of Jesus' death, the King comes into his own in the garden of resurrection.
Nineteen essays discuss the interrelationships between theatrical performance and religious experience--with primarily a Judeo- Christian emphasis, though the editor points out the potential for exploration in connection with all the world religions. Among the topics discussed: holy space and representational place in the tenth- century, Norwegian rock art as the first sources of theater in Europe, the sacramental aesthetic in the plays of Dorothy L. Sayers, religious implications of drama from the Holocaust, and holy scriptures and subversive theater in Poland. Levy is a theater director and author with profound enthusiasm for his topic. Football star Harry Charles begins college life yearning for acceptance that his small town can't give him. When his father commits suicide, he is thrust into wealth and perceived social prominence, as well as into a chronic depression-an illness little understood in 1917. Harry's charismatic new roommate, Simon, exposes him to gambling, drinking and the seductive world of horse racing at Saratoga Race Course. Harry's addiction to winning at all costs fuels his participation in a rigged horse race, an orchestrated sinking of a valuable car, and the fixed World Series of 1919. Will alcohol and gambling permanently rob Harry of the love of his life, his sanity, his money, and the happy life he may have led? Or will he be given a last chance to become the person he has always been? In this fast-paced perilous race through life, beating the odds of addiction may make Harry a hopeless longshot that will never win.

Having devoted the past ten years of his life to research for this major new work, John Nolland gives us a commentary on the Gospel of Matthew that engages with a notable range of Matthean scholarship and offers fresh interpretations of the dominant Gospel in the history of the church. Without neglecting the Gospel's sources or historical background, Nolland places his central focus on the content and method of Matthew's story. His work explores Matthew's narrative technique and the inner logic of the unfolding text, giving full weight to the Jewish character of the book and its differences from Mark's presentation of parallel material. While finding it unlikely that the apostle Matthew hims...

This is a volume of essays, which examines the relationship between the play and its historical and cultural contexts. Transferring plays from one period or one culture to another is so much more than translating the words from one language into another. The contributors vary their approaches to this problem from the theoretical to the practical, from the literary to the theatrical, with plays examined both historically and synchronically. The articles interact with each other, presenting a diversity of views of the central theme and establishing a dialogue between scholars of different cultures. With play texts quoted in English, the range of themes stretches from a Japanese interpretation of Chekhov to Shakespeare in Nazi Germany, and Racine borrowing from Sophocles. Most of the essays are based on papers presented at the Jerusalem Theatre Conference in 1986. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of the theatre and of literature and literary theory as well as to theatregoers.
