This book provides an understanding of ultrasound imaging principles and how the field is evolving to better probe living systems. Today, widely-used imaging systems visualize structures and blood flow within the body in real-time. Parallelamente alle vicende politiche e militari che accompagnarono la creazione dell'unità nazionale corre una atteggiamento di particolare attenzione verso la conoscenza dell'Italia dal punto di vista artistico e paesaggistico. Si vuole rappresentare il paese per farlo conoscere attraverso le sue specifiche peculiarità: si eseguono vedute di città e di paesaggio, secondo la consuetudine consolidata dai Grand Tour, ma, lentamente, si iniziano anche a fotografare monumenti e dipinti, collezioni d'arte e musei e, in particolare è questo aspetto che acquista maggior peso ed importanza legandosi agli ambienti di studio e dei connoisseurs. L'arte viene vista come momento di coesione nazionale e si cerca di divulgare l'idea che l'unità culturale della nazione italiana era preesistente rispetto a quella politica. La fotografia partecipa di questo clima culturale nella deliberata certezza che le opere dei grandi artisti del passato devono di diritto far parte del Pantheon culturale della nazione.
