Total Solar Eclipses and How to Observe Them

This is the ultimate, easy-to-read guide for "eclipse-chasers" which includes everything an eclipse chaser needs. There are some important eclipses coming up in the years ahead and the technology available to amateur astronomers is improving fast. The book provides "eclipse virgins" with a good feeling for what a trip abroad to an eclipse is like – including a humorous look at all the things that can and have gone wrong. Travel details are included, essential in these days of high-security. And of course the first part of the book contains a wealth of information about solar eclipses and what can be observed only during a total eclipse.

Solar and Lunar Eclipses

Solar and lunar eclipses have both frightened and fascinated humans for thousands of years. Perhaps it’s because they are one of the few events in the universe that can be seen so dramatically from Earth. This exciting and informative book describes what happens during an eclipse and why. Readers will delight in the clear, easy-to-understand text and vibrant photographs.

Solar Eclipses 2024–2027

Seeing a total solar eclipse (‘totality’ – when the sun is fully obscured by the moon) is a bucket-list event, generating a sense of wonder and even an ‘end-of-the-world’ sensation. New from Bradt, Solar Eclipses 2024–2027 is the only guide to cover the world’s next three total solar eclipses, arguably Nature’s most incredible spectacle. Written by an eclipse expert, this guide offers potential eclipse-tourists and eclipse-chasers alike everything they need to understand, prepare for and travel to each eclipse. Each eclipse will be remarkable in its own right. The 2024 totality will be visible in 15 US states, six Canadian provinces and parts of Mexico. The events offer US re...

Totality

'Totality: Eclipses of the Sun' takes you to eclipses of the past, present and future, and lets you see - and feel - why people travel to the ends of the Earth to observe them. The book explains how to observe eclipses, how to photograph them, why they occur, their history and mythology, and when and where to see future eclipses.

Theoretical and Observational Problems Related to Solar Eclipses

The NATO ARW on the problems of ground-based observations of Solar Eclipses was held in Sinaia (Romania) between 1 and 5 June 1996. The Workshop was divided into seven sessions, in which 17 papers were given, by key speakers, along with 30 oral presentations. Additionally, 30 posters were presented. This issue contains only the invited and oral papers. The posters are to be published in a special issue of the Romanian Astronomical Journal. The contributions were based on our present knowledge of solar corona physics and on the perspectives for future total eclipse observations, focussing especially on that of August 11, 1999, which will be the last eclipse of the century. The workshop sessions reviewed the results of past eclipse observations, coronal hot and cold structures, coronal heating, public education, and instrumental problems. At the end of the meeting a fruitful general discussion drew out problems to be studied and techniques to be used for forthcoming observations. Posters completed the workshop contributions.

Eclipse and Revelation

Two questions guide this seven-year project: First, how can we approach the phenomenon, representation, and interpretation of total solar eclipses? Second, how can we heal the historical divide separating the natural sciences from the humanities, arts, history, and theology? The result of this interdisciplinary investigation into eclipses is an exciting look behind the scenes - into labs, archives, and museums, as well as around fieldwork in astronomy, meteorology, animal behaviour, and ecophysiology. Carefully prepared for readers from all backgrounds, these voices invite us to imagine a liberated mode of discovery, perception, creativity, and knowledge-production across the traditional aca...

Empire and the Sun

Astronomy was a popular and important part of Victorian sciences, and British astronomers carried telescopes to remote areas in India, North America, and Caribbean and Pacific islands to watch solar eclipses. This book tells the full story of these expeditions: the long periods of planning and financing, and the day-to-day work of getting to field sites, setting up camp, and preparing, observing, and recording eclipses.

Totality: The Great American Eclipses is a complete guide to the most stunning of celestial sights, total eclipses of the Sun. It focuses on the eclipses of August 21, 2017 and April 8, 2024 that pass across the United States. The U.S. mainland has not experienced a total solar eclipse since 1979. This book provides information, photographs, and illustrations to help the public understand and safely enjoy all aspects of these eclipses including: § How to observe a total eclipse of the Sun § How to photograph and video record an eclipse § Why solar eclipses happen § The earliest attempts to understand and predict eclipses § The mythology and folklore of eclipses § The response of animal...
