My younger siblings often wanted to know about the house they were born to and the homeland's traditions and rituals. I, the oldest of five, related to them the experiences we encountered among the Gottscheers, who worked, toiled, and survived in this little known native land surrounded by Slovenia and bordered by Croatia.

Aston challenges and reshapes the on-going debate concerning social status, economic opportunity, and gender roles in nineteenth-century society. Sources including trade directories, census returns, probate records, newspapers, advertisements, and photographs are analysed and linked to demonstrate conclusively that women in nineteenth-century England were far more prevalent in business than previously acknowledged. Moreover, women were able to establish and expand their businesses far beyond the scope of inter-generational caretakers in sectors of the economy traditionally viewed as unfeminine, and acquire the assets and possessions that were necessary to secure middle-class status. These women serve as a powerful reminder that the middle-class woman’s retreat from economic activity during the nineteenth-century, so often accepted as axiomatic, was not the case. In fact, women continued to act as autonomous and independent entrepreneurs, and used business ownership as a platform to participate in the economic, philanthropic, and political public sphere.

One of the most fascinating figures in Canadian history, Hamilton's Sir Allan Napier MacNab, was a charismatic character who lived large in the political and business world of his day. Born into a genteel family on the fringe of the powerful Family Compact, MacNab began his career as a boy soldier in the War of 1812, then dabbled in the theatre before beginning a law practice. A banker financing his own ventures, he made his fortune in land development and railways, and spent half of his adult life in politics, serving as premier and acting as speaker for both houses during his more than a quarter century in parliament. He built his "fort on the water" that would become known as Dundurn Cast...

However, his powers were given to him by less than heroic means, by someone with an anti-hero agenda. Emery must choose between his powers and his new friends. Or was it that they choose him? This book is a short novel, much like Japanese short novels such as "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya". However, it is based in the style of battle anime such as "Naruto" and "One Piece".
