Treasures of Sopris documents the small coal mining community of Sopris, Colorado. Sopris was once a thriving coal mining camp, before residents were forced to vacate their homes in the late 1960s. After damaging floods devastated the City of Trinidad, the Flood Control Act in 1958 paved the way for the creation of the Trinidad Lake Recreation Area. The reservoir was developed directly over the beloved community of Sopris. Many residents left their homes reluctantly, they were heartbroken to leave behind the lives they had built and the memories created in the tight-knit coal mining community. Treasures of Sopris documents the history of the people who lived in the seven communities which comprised Sopris: Sopris Plaza, Main Sopris, Upper St. Thomas, St. Thomas, Jerryville, Piedmont, and Sopris Canyon. The memories of Sopris families are archived in this book. Their stories and photographs document life in this coal mining community. Personal accounts of their history reflect the struggles of immigrants in search of a better life while persevering during much hardship.
From Gregory's Diggings prospector to Denver mayor, Richard Sopris left an indelible mark on the Mile High City and Centennial State. During an 1860 prospecting expedition, Sopris discovered Glenwood Springs and the nearly thirteen-thousand-foot summit later named for him. Following life as a steamboat captain, he was appointed captain of Company C, First Colorado Cavalry, in 1861 and commanded volunteer troops at Glorieta Pass. After serving as a delegate to the first constitutional convention of Colorado and as Arapaho County sheriff, he helped quell the Hop Alley Chinese Riot of 1880 and enacted public works projects to rid Denver of a deadly typhoid outbreak. After his mayoral term ended in 1881, Sopris became the first commissioner of his beloved City Park. Author Linda Bjorklund celebrates the unsung life and accomplishments of a founding son of Colorado.

Autism is in the public spotlight now more than ever as new research and information appears almost daily. Although in many ways this is a positive development it also presents challenges to families and practitioners who want to keep up with the latest developments and are left to sift through new information by themselves to see what is credible and relevant for them. Each of us needs a personal research assistant who can determine which information we need to pay attention to and let us know how it might affect our daily work and the children we are living with or serve. Since we each don’t have our own research assistants on staff, I am delighted to recommend this wonderful book by Fred...
