PM’s Rehabilitation Package for the Farmers in Suicide Prone Districts of Maharashtra: Impact and Policy Implications

Indian agriculture is currently passing through a period of severe crisis. Although certain features of the crisis such as deceleration in growth rate, declining share of agriculture in GDP and falling public investment in agriculture started manifesting themselves in certain parts of India during the late 1980s, the crisis assumed a serious dimension since the middle of the 1990s. One of the tragic manifestations of the crisis in the large number of suicides committed by the farmers in some parts of India mainly concentrated in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.Concerned with farmers suicides, the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India announced a rehabilitation packages on July 1, 2006. The implementation period of the package was fixed at 3 years This book examines the ground reality as to whether the benefits of this package reached the intended beneficiaries in Maharashtra and also the impact of the package on the beneficiates.

Solarisation of Agricultural Water Pumps in Western India

This book is outcome of the research report on “Solarisation of Agricultural Water Pumps in Western India”. The book is structured in five chapters highlighting important issues related to large scale adoption of solar irrigation pumps, its economic feasibility and problems in adoption of same in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The book provides useful insights to understand the socio-economic profile of adopter households and constraints faced by them. This book would be helpful to adopt the suitable measures and policies for better and speedy adoption of solar pump and thus help in increasing income of the farmers.

Agricultural Growth and Productivity in Maharashtra

Maharashtra is an important state of India so far as its contribution to the agriculture development of the country is concerned. During the last four decades, the agricultural sector of Maharashtra has undergone lots of changes. Though agricultural performance improved during the last forty years, its progress was not sustained and showed wide fluctuations. In fact, the important characteristics of Maharashtra agriculture are the instability in crop production and significant regional variations in the performance of agriculture in the state. The recent farmer suicides in Vidarbha and Marathawada have once again highlighted regional disparity in Maharashtra. The agrarian crisis in Vidarbha has spun almost out of control. There are a number of factors which limit the growth of agriculture over the years in the state. It is, therefore, necessary to look into the factors affecting agricultural growth.

Status of Dairying and Potential to Improve Socio-Economic Condition

This book is outcome of the research report on “Assessment of the Status of Dairying and Potential to Improve Socio-Economic Status of the Milk Producers and Convergence of all Central & State Schemes at District level in India” covering seven eastern and two western states of India, viz. Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Eastern UP, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Rajasthan carried out at the Agro-Economic Research Centre, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Anand, Gujarat, as entrusted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi. The study is based on both primary and secondary level data. This book would be helpful to enhance efficiency of implementation of dairy development activities in eastern states of India and thus benefitting the milk producers.

Water Security for Agriculture: Atma Nirbhar Farmers—‘Water-Smart’ & ‘Climate-Smart’ Action – 2047

India is an agriculture economy where land and water are two key natural resources upon which farmers depend for their livelihoods and development. Farmers’ development depends upon interactions of these and other resources, institutions, actions and policies and their ultimate outcomes. It would be naive to perceive that all rural poverty problems could be solved through improving the poor’s access to water alone through development of irrigated area in rainfed conditions. However, though water is only a single element in the poverty equation, it plays a disproportionately powerful role through its wider impacts on such factors as food and other essential agricultural production. Water ...

Pressurized Irrigation Network Systems in India

The present book intends to assess the performance of Pressurized Irrigation Network System (PINS), the effectiveness of institutional arrangements for management of PINS projects and the bottlenecks for their smooth functioning in India. Since Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Telangana are the leading states of the country promoting PINS and MIS, the study was planned as an all India coordinated study covering these four states. The WUAs in the study areas of the selected states were interviewed to capture the dynamics of community based irrigation management. Under different command areas, the study analysed system performance of PINS with MIS such as drip and sprinklers in terms of their functioning, costs and benefits, adoptability. The study finds beneficial impact of PINS investment on cropped area, irrigation area, farm production as well as water and energy savings. The book will be very useful for those who are interested in policies and governance issues related to irrigation water management in the country and the selected states in particular.

Contract farming, productivity and fertilizer usage: Empirical evidence from specialty crop production

This study investigates the impact of contract farming (CF) in baby corn production on yield, irrigation costs, fertilizer costs and usage of chemical fertilizer. We find that adoption of CF by baby corn smallholders, after controlling for characteristics of both control and treatment groups, leads to higher yields and lower spending on fertilizers and irrigation. Additionally, CF in baby corn farming leads to a reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers (Urea and DAP). Thus, CF intervention benefits the livelihood of smallholders, reduces environmental degradation and reduces stress on groundwater without compromising yield.

This book examines the performance of organized retail chains supplying the agri-input and output services in terms of achieving their objective of utilising collective bargaining power in the marketing of their agricultural produce, integrating empirical experience from India and other selected developing countries. The scenario of marketing for agricultural products has been undergoing rapid changes with the rise of organised retailing (the Indian term for ‘supermarkets’), a process that is likely to accelerate in years to come, with India being on the threshold of a supermarket revolution. In fact, India is referred to as the ‘final frontier’ in the development of supermarkets. Th...

This textbook introduces Wireless Powered Communication Networks (WPCNs) as a promising paradigm to overcome the energy bottleneck suffered by traditional wireless communication networks, as well as emerging Internet-of-Things networks. It selectively spans a coherent spectrum of fundamental aspects in WPCNs, such as wireless energy transfer (WEH) techniques, radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting receiver model, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), as well as the rate-energy tradeoff arising from the joint transmission of information and energy using the same waveform. It covers network models for WPCNs, including the baseline and dual-hop WPCN models and a variety ...
