Cyanobacteria are a group of ubiquitous photosynthetic prokaryotes. Their occurrence has been increasing worldwide, due to anthropogenic activities and climate change. Several cyanobacterial species are able to synthesize a high number of bioactive molecules, among them, cyanotoxins (microcystins, cylindrospermopsin, nodularin, etc.), which are considered a health concern. For risk assessment of cyanotoxins, more scientific knowledge is required to perform adequate hazard characterization, exposure evaluation and, finally, risk characterization of these toxins. This Special Issue “Cyanobacteria and Cyanotoxins: New Advances and Future Challenges” presents new research or review articles related to different aspects of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins, and contributes to providing new toxicological data and methods for a more realistic risk assessment.

Heat Shock Proteins of Malaria

This new edition describes the role of heat shock proteins in the life cycle of malaria parasites, particularly in the context of intracellular parasite stages. Thoroughly revised, this work provides a general introduction to the structural and functional features of heat shock proteins with a special focus on their role as molecular chaperones in ensuring protein quality control. The emphasis is on the heat shock protein families from Plasmodium falciparum, and their role in proteostasis and the development of malaria pathology. Moreover, the authors explore the latest prospects of targeting heat shock proteins in antimalarial drug discovery either directly or in combination therapies. Read...

South Africa’s Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Program

"This paper explores the South African experience of introducing grid-connected renewable energy by seeking answers to a number of key questions: 1. Why and how did South Africa move from feed-in tariffs to competitive tenders for grid-connected renewable energy? 2. How did the government design and manage the program? What were the distinctive features of these competitive tenders, and how were the bids evaluated? 3. What were the investment and price outcomes of the different bid rounds? 4. Who were the key private sector actors in the various deals? What kinds of financing institutions were involved? Who were the successful sponsors, equipment providers, and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors? 5. What were the impacts and trade-offs between prices and economic development outcomes (e.g., local industrial development and employment creation)? 6. What were the key success factors, shortcomings and risks associated with the program? 7. What lessons can the South African program offer to other developing countries? "

This book presents the advances in plant salinity stress and tolerance, including mechanistic insights revealed using powerful molecular tools and multi-omics and gene functions studied by genetic engineering and advanced biotechnological methods. Additionally, the use of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in the improvement of plant salinity tolerance and the underlying mechanisms and progress in breeding for salinity-tolerant rice are comprehensively discussed. Clearly, the published data have contributed to the significant progress in expanding our knowledge in the field of plant salinity stress and the results are valuable in developing salinity-stress-tolerant crops; in benefiting their quality and productivity; and eventually, in supporting the sustainability of the world food supply.
