An illustrated exploration of Girlfriends (1965/66), one of Sigmar Polke's important early paintings. The artist Sigmar Polke (1941–2010) worked across a broad range of media—including photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and film—and in styles that varied from abstract expressionism to Pop. This volume in Afterall's One Work series offers an illustrated exploration of Freundinnen (Girlfriends 1965/66), one of Polke's important early paintings. Taken from a found image of two young women, and using the raster dots also found in mass media reproductions, Girlfriends offers a statement about the use and social function of images. Stefan Gronert approaches Girlfriends through it...

Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall

The photographic works of Canadian artist Jeff Wall (b. 1946)--staged, apparently quotidian scenes presented in large-format light boxes--have persistently preoccupied art historians and critics. In this volume, Stefan Gronert, curator for contemporary art at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, tracks the multilayered references to the history of painting that Jeff Wall, himself an art historian, integrates into his work. For example, the title of The Thinker (1986) is itself a reference to Rodin; Wall, however, transfers the figure in the typical Thinker pose to a contemporary urban setting and introduces the "grotesque" element of a knife in the protagonist's back, which in turn alludes to Dürer. Using 17 examples from the late 1970s until today, Gronert traces the complex strategies of appropriation and reinterpretation of famous works from art history that Jeff Wall's pictures render in a manner that seems so timelessly contemporary.

Painting, Photography, and the Digital

  • Categories: Art

This anthology investigates the interconnections between painting, photography, and the digital in contemporary art practices. It brings together 15 contributors, including internationally acclaimed artists Matt Saunders, Clare Strand, Elias Wessel, and Dan Hays, to write about a diverse range of art-making involving medium cross-over. Topics discussed here include reflections on the painted-on-photograph, reordering photographs into paintings, digital collage, printing digital landscapes onto recycled electronic media, viewer immersion in painted virtual reality (VR) worlds, photography created from paint, and the “truth” of the mediums. Underpinned by significant theoretical concepts, the volume provides unique insights into explorations of the mediums’ interconnectivity, which questions the position of the traditional genres. As such, this book is essential reading for practitioners, theorists, and students researching the nature of painting, photography, and digital art practices today.

The Düsseldorf School of Photography

Now reissued in an attractively priced, compact edition, this classic and authoritative survey is the first detailed account of a seminal era in photographic history. Inspired and guided by Bernd and Hiller Becher, themselves pioneers in the area of documentary photography, the artists of Germany’s Düsseldorf School not only pushed the boundaries of their teachers’ practice, but also ushered in three generations of technical and compositional achievement that is rivalled in importance only by the arrival of color photography. This book introduces readers to the historic, cultural, and scientific environments in which the Bechers’ practice thrived. It explores the teaching philosophies with which they encouraged their students, and considers the qualities that highlight the Düsseldorf School: intricate detail, large scale, painterly distance combined with an immersive quality. The plate section, organized by artist, features 160 beautifully reproduced images by Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Laurenz Berges, Elger Esser, Simone Nieweg, Jörg Sasse, and Petra Wunderlich.

Ralf Brueck

A young proponent of the Düsseldorf school of photography and a master pupil of Thomas Ruff's, the artist Ralf Brueck (b. 1966) thematizes in his sophisticated, stringently composed works the architectural interior, the expanse of landscape, and modern architecture. The publication illustrates Brueck's genesis--which began with the series Timecapsules, created at the end of the 1990s and devoted to modern church buildings--and builds a bridge to his two new series, Distortion and Deconstruction.
