A Conspiratorial Life

The first full-scale biography of Robert Welch, who founded the John Birch Society and planted some of modern conservatism’s most insidious seeds. Though you may not know his name, Robert Welch (1899-1985)—founder of the John Birch Society—is easily one of the most significant architects of our current political moment. In A Conspiratorial Life, the first full-scale biography of Welch, Edward H. Miller delves deep into the life of an overlooked figure whose ideas nevertheless reshaped the American right. A child prodigy who entered college at age 12, Welch became an unlikely candy magnate, founding the company that created Sugar Daddies, Junior Mints, and other famed confections. In 19...

Trust in Agent Societies

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Trust in Agent Societies, TRUST 2008, held in Estoril, Portugal, in the context of AAMAS 2008, the main international conference on autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. The 17 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions; they are fully revised to incorporate reviewers' comments and discussions at the workshop. The volume is organized in ternary topical sections on theoretical and applicative aspects of trust (from a engineering, cognitive, computational, sociological point of view), on formal models in the field of applied logic and applied mathematics, and finally on models of reputation systems, theory-driven and empirically backed-up guidelines for designing reputation technologies, and analysis and discussion of existing reputation systems.

Economic Models and Algorithms for Distributed Systems

Distributed computing paradigms for sharing resources such as Clouds, Grids, Peer-to-Peer systems, or voluntary computing are becoming increasingly popular. While there are some success stories such as PlanetLab, OneLab, BOINC, BitTorrent, and SETI@home, a widespread use of these technologies for business applications has not yet been achieved. In a business environment, mechanisms are needed to provide incentives to potential users for participating in such networks. These mechanisms may range from simple non-monetary access rights, monetary payments to specific policies for sharing. Although a few models for a framework have been discussed (in the general area of a "Grid Economy"), none of these models has yet been realised in practice. This book attempts to fill this gap by discussing the reasons for such limited take-up and exploring incentive mechanisms for resource sharing in distributed systems. The purpose of this book is to identify research challenges in successfully using and deploying resource sharing strategies in open-source and commercial distributed systems.

Autonomic and Trusted Computing

No fewer than 55 revised full papers are presented in this volume, all given at the 4th International Conference on Autonomic and Trusted Computing, held in Hong Kong, China in July 2007. The papers, presented together with one keynote lecture, were carefully reviewed and selected from 223 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on, among others, cryptography and signatures, autonomic computing and services, and secure and trusted computing.

Multiagent System Technologies

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th German Conference on Multiagent Systems Technologies, MATES 2009, held in Hamburg, Germany in September 2009 - colocated with the 10th International Workshop on Computational Logic in Multi-Agent Systems (CLIMA X) and the 5th International Workshop on Modelling of Objects, Components, and Agents (MOCA 2009). The 14 revised full papers, 10 short papers, and 5 exhibition papers presented together with one invited talk were carefully reviewed and selected from 44 submissions. The papers present and discuss the latest advances of research and development in the area of autonomous agents and multiagent systems ranging from theoretical and methodological issues to applications in various fields.

The Colonial Andes

"This unique volume illustrates and discusses in detail more than 160 extraordinary fine and decorative art works of the colonial Andes, including examples of the intricate Inca weavings and metalwork that preceded the colonial era as well as a few of the remarkably inventive forms this art took after independence from Spain. An international array of scholars and experts examines the cultural context, aesthetic preoccupations, and diverse themes of art from the viceregal period, particularly the florid patternings and the fanciful beasts and hybrid creatures that have come to characterize colonial Andean art."--Jacket.
