Urban Rhythms and Travel Behaviour

The recent availability of longitudinal data on individual trip making and activity behaviour has provided analysts with new insights into the structures and motives of daily life travel. Multi-week travel diary data-sets and GPS observations are exciting sources of information for the description and modelling of the variability of individual travel patterns. Through an analysis of these strong new data sets, this book questions what are the most suitable methodological tools to represent the structures of long-term travel behaviour. It also examines what the data tells us about the travellers' motives and looks at how planning should translate the findings into forecasting tools and transport strategies. In doing so, the multifaceted and ambiguous character of daily life travel is revealed, illustrating how, while sound routines in time and space seem to dominate daily life, individuals show a considerable amount of variability and flexibility in travel and activity behaviour.

Civil Democracy Protection

Civil Democracy Protection is an overview of attempts by organisations to oppose groups that are perceived to threaten democracy. The book traces the history of civil democracy protection actors from the establishment of democratic constitutional states up to the present day and develops a set of systematic and comparative approaches. The central question it explores is: What significance do civil actors have for the establishment and consolidation of democratic constitutional states, especially in relation to the protection of democracy by state institutions? The volume includes contributions from historians and social scientists, who combine idiographic approaches that focus on the specifi...

Remembering 1989

This account of the “laboratory of radical democracy” in the months before East Germany’s absorption in the West challenges memories of Germany’s reunification. For many, 1989 is an iconic date, one we associate with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. The year prompts some to rue the defeat of socialism in the East, while others celebrate a victory for democracy and capitalism in the reunified Germany. Remembering 1989 focuses on a largely forgotten interregnum: the months between the outbreak of protests in the German Democratic Republic in 1989 and its absorption by the West in 1990. Anke Pinkert, who herself participated in those protests, recalls these month...

The Real and Virtual Worlds of Spatial Planning

The Real and Virtual Worlds of Spatial Planning

The Real and Virtual Worlds of Spatial Planning brings together contributions from leaders in landscape, transportation, and urban planning. They present case studies - from North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa - that ground the exploration of ideas in the realities of sustainable urban and regional planning, landscape planning and present the prospects for using virtual worlds for modeling spatial environments and their application in planning. The first part explores the challenges for planning in the real world that are caused by the dynamics of socio-spatial systems as well as by the contradictions of their evolutionary trends related to their spatial layout. The second part presents diverse concepts to model, analyze, visualize, monitor and control socio-spatial systems by using virtual worlds

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on NASA Formal Methods, NFM 2015, held in Pasadena, CA, USA, in April 2015. The 24 revised regular papers presented together with 9 short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 108 submissions. The topics include model checking, theorem proving; SAT and SMT solving; symbolic execution; static analysis; runtime verification; systematic testing; program refinement; compositional verification; security and intrusion detection; modeling and specification formalisms; model-based development; model-based testing; requirement engineering; formal approaches to fault tolerance; and applications of formal methods.

Supply Chain Resilience

Every global crisis highlights the strategic importance of industrial and non-profit supply chains for society. In terms of coping with unforeseen and unpredictable events, supply chain resilience enables the parties and networks involved to stay successful during and after the disruption. Furthermore, a resilient supply chain contributes to the sustainable competitive advantage of the entire value chain. Written by scholars and practitioners alike, this book not only puts forward a new framework for resilience in supply chain management, but also presents best practice cases from various areas and industries. As a particular highlight, it includes a Delphi study that gathers state-of-the-art insights from supply chain leaders. In addition to practical approaches, methods and tools, the book also offers food for thought on the future of supply chain resilience. As such, it offers a valuable resource for current and future managers in the public and private sector, as well as researchers and students engaged in this field.

Spatial Models and GIS

Spatial models have been in existence in the environmental and social sciences for a long time. More recently, specialised software for the capture, manipulation and presentation of spatial data, which can be referred to as `Geographical Information Systems' (GIS), have vastly increased the range of possibilities of organising spatial data by new and efficient ways of spatial integration and spatial interpolation. Coupled with the improvements in data availability and increases in computer memory and speed, these novel techniques give rise to new types of spatial models which exploit the technological potential now available, make better use of existing data, stimulate the collection of new data and open up new ways of working with geographic information. This book explores the potential and impact of GIS on spatial modelling.

Sensors in Science and Technology

Sensors are used to measure physical, chemical and biological quantities. The book offers a comprehensive overview of physical principles, functions and applications of sensors. It is structured according to the fields of activity of sensors and shows their application by means of typical examples. Measured variables that can be recorded by sensors are e.g. mechanical, dynamic, thermal, electrical and magnetic. Furthermore, optical and acoustical sensors are discussed in detail in the book. The sensor signals are recorded, processed and converted into control signals for actuators. Such sensor systems are also presented.

TRR no. 2021 includes 14 papers that explore intrahousehold interaction analysis, agent-oriented coupling of activity-based demand generation with multiagent traffic simulation, modeling adults' weekend day-time use, human interaction spaces under uncertainty, and analysis of children's daily time-use and activity patterns. This issue of the TRR also examines a stated adaptation survey of activity rescheduling; recurrence of daily travel patterns; interactions between residential relocations, life course events, and daily commute distances; capturing human activity spaces; identifying skeletal information of activity patterns; successfully changing individual travel behavior; mobility management in Japan; who chooses to carpool and why; and commuter parking versus transit-oriented development.
