Political Faultlines in the Middle East
The region of the Middle East is beset with a structural crisis of which particular crises confronting the component countries happen to be merely subsets. The real questions revolve round the issue of how long can the present dispensations of power and social structures in the region forged in the twentieth century (first half or second) can last in the twenty-first, when they no longer reflect the realities on the ground. This volume aims to look at some of the issues to see how the faultlines in the region appear in 2020 to both those in the region, and those outside it. The volume limits itself to only Levant and the Gulf and looks at the tensions within and policies (both foreign and domestic) of some of the key regional players which have regional repercussions. It also looks at the policies of some of the global players operating in the region that have bearing on the regional faultlines. Refuting the Anti-Israel Narrative
In recent decades, Israel has come under sustained diplomatic pressure from the West. According to the press and the policy establishment, she acts aggressively and with disregard for civilian lives in pursuit of an unnecessary and illegal occupation of Palestinian territory. Others view the country as an embarrassing outpost of colonialism, racism and apartheid whose actions--and those of the "pro-Israel lobby"--have provoked a fiery Islamist backlash. Sixty years after a Red Army doctor snatched him from the jaws of death at Theresienstadt, Shelomo Selinger unveils sixty drawings based upon his own concentration camp experience. Needless to say, nothing he draws is fictional, as he himself was an inmate in nine different camps. The artist had already established himself as a fine sculptor when, some twenty years after taking up the chisel, he started working with charcoal and ink. Like Goya, Selinger is more than an artist of the horrors of war, especially when he uses line to describe what he lived through. In this medium, we become most aware of his great mastery. These drawings are terrible testimony to the unthinkable atrocity of the Shoah. They are also masterpieces from the art of the second-half of the twentieth century.

Cold War Ecology
East Germany, its economy, and its society were in decline long before the country’s political collapse in the late 1980s. The clues were there in the natural landscape, Arvid Nelson argues in this groundbreaking book, but policy analysts were blind to them. Had they noted the record of the leadership’s values and goals manifest in the landscape, they wouldn’t have hailed East Germany as a Marxist-Leninist success story. Nelson sets East German history within the context of the landscape history of two centuries to underscore how forest and ecosystem change offered a reliable barometer to the health and stability of the political system that governed them. Cold War Ecology records how East German leaders’ indifference to human rights and their disregard for the landscape affected the rural economy, forests, and population. This lesson from history suggests new ways of thinking about the health of ecosystems and landscapes, Nelson shows, and he proposes assessing the stability of modern political systems based on the environment’s system qualities rather than on political leaders’ goals and beliefs.
