European Book Cultures
Stephanie Kurschus analyses the idea of a common "European" book culture that integrates the book market as an essential aspect and employs book promotion as balancing instrument. Characteristics of book culture are identified; the resultant concept of book culture provides an overview of the values and myths ascribed to the book. Furthermore, applied book promotion measures are analyzed for their effectiveness and best practice models. Since, in a context determined by culture and market, preservation and innovation, book promotion fulfills two functions: it is to protect the unique national characteristics of book culture as well as to support its continuous development. To adapt and to advance within a changing environment is critical to the survival of book culture in the digital reality.

Nation of Bookworms takes an in-depth look at the reading culture of the Czech Republic--the country with the highest number of libraries per capita worldwide. Drawing on studies and oral interviews of Czech readers conducted by the National Library of the Czech Republic and the Institute of Czech Literature between 2007 and 2018, the book presents intriguing new research on Czech readership and society. Jiří Trávníček deftly sifts through hard data and first-person reportage, illuminating the myriad components that make up reading culture, such as print-reading, screen-reading, libraries, book sales, the social lives of readers, time spent reading, and reading preferences. Trávníček also takes a global look at literary love, exploring the parallels between the reading cultures of other countries and the Czechs’ unique fervor for the written word. Bibliodiversität im Kontext des französischen Ehrengastauftritts Francfort en français auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2017
Der französische Ehrengastauftritt auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2017 rückte statt der Literatur Frankreichs die französische Sprache in den Fokus, und erklärte, "ein internationales Schaufenster der Literatur in französischer Sprache in ihrer größten Vielfalt" sein zu wollen. Die Studie setzt sich mit dem Konzept der Bibliodiversität - kultureller Vielfalt bezogen auf das Buchwesen - und seiner Bedeutung im Kontext von Francfort en francais auseinander. Sie klärt, wie Bibliodiversität bei der Umsetzung des Auftritts berücksichtigt wurde, und untersucht dessen Folgen für die Akteur:innen in den beteiligten frankophonen und deutschsprachigen literarischen Feldern, sowie für die Diversität von Übersetzungen aus dem Französischen auf dem deutschsprachigen Buchmarkt. Die Studie stellt eine der wenigen bisher existierenden, umfassenden und empirischen Untersuchungen zur Bibliodiversität dar.

Are Books Still 'Different'?
The famous 1962 precedent at the Restrictive Practices Court of the United Kingdom, 'Books are different,' is still the reasoning behind many cultural policies around the world, building on longstanding assumptions surrounding 'the book'. As this suggests, the 'difference' of the book as a unique form of cultural (rather than economic) production has acquired a powerful status. But are books still different? In (somewhat provocatively) asking this question from a network-oriented and interdisciplinary perspective (book studies/literary studies), this Element inquires into the notion of 'difference' in relation to books. Challenging common notions of 'bibliodiversity,' it reconsiders the lack of diversity in the publishing industry. It also engages with the diversifying potentials of the digital literary sphere, offering a case study of Bernardine Evaristo's industry activities and activism, the Element concludes with thoughts on bookishness, affect and networked practice. Ein Fokus liegt dabei unter anderem auf der Möglichkeit für das Marketing einzelner Buchtitel. Gleichzeitig nimmt die Autorin Bezug auf die inhaltlichen Aspekte online durchgeführter Reading Groups, um bspw. die Relevanz der Autoreneinbindung herauszuarbeiten. Dieser bisher wenig beachtete Bereich der Buchvermittlung wird im Zeitalter des Social Networking immer bedeutsamer.

Die Politik der Buchübersetzung
Hinter der Auswahl von wissenschaftlichen Übersetzungen und ihren Übersetzer*innen steht eine komplexe Politik der Buchübersetzung mit nachhaltigen Auswirkungen auf das jeweilige Feld. Translationspolitik wiederum prägt die sozialen Ausdeutungen der Buchübersetzung. Diese Studie nimmt die Buchübersetzung in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in den Fokus und rekonstruiert Übersetzungsflüsse, translatorische Netzwerke und Positionierungen von Übersetzer*innen. In vielschichtiger Weise zeichnet sie die Politik der Buchübersetzung in der BRD ab 1945 nach, zeigt bedeutende Entwicklungslinien auf und verdeutlicht den wechselseitigen Einfluss zwischen Wissenschaft und Übersetzung.
