Immune Recognition
Immune Recognition is a modified compilation of an experimental leukocyte culture conference about various aspects of macrophage and lymphocyte biology in relation to the eponymous central theme. The book is divided into nine sections. Section I covers non-antigenic signals and receptors for lymphocyte activation; the recognition of chemically modified autologous cells; surface membrane saccharides; and B and T cell activation. Section II is about antigenic signals; the activation of macrophages; and the induction of autosensitization of initiator lymphocytes. Sections III and IV discuss the early membrane and biochemical events in lymphocyte activation. Sections V to IX cover the coupling of cytoplasmic and nuclear events to membrane cycles; cellular and molecular basis of cell recognition and interaction in nonlymphocyte systems; the genetic control of immunocompetent cell interactions; and cellular mechanisms that regulate the immune response. The text is intended for doctors who specialize in immunology and want to know more about the different factors that cause the recognition of the immune system.
The Immune System
The cells of the immune system generate a large variety of binding sites which differ in their binding specificities and can therefore react specifically with a large variety of ligands. These binding sites are part of receptor molecules, enabling the system to react to the universe of antigens. The classical antigen receptor is the antibody molecule, and accord ingly the first session of this colloquium deals with a classical sub ject, namely antibody structure. Dramatic recent advances in this field make it possible to interrelate primary and three-dimensional struc ture both to each other and to function, i.e. the binding of antigen and possible reactions occurring in the antibody molecule upon antigen binding. The latter point is of particular interest since it may be relevant not only for effector functions of antibodies such as the binding of complement, but also for the triggering of a lymphocyte through its antibody receptor for antigen.

The 55th Nobel Symposium entitled "Genetics of the Immune Response" took place in Saltsjobaden, Sweden, June 15 - 17, 1982. Der Schilkseer Strand, ein idyllischer Ort. Im Strandkorb liegen, die Segelschiffe des nahen Olympiahafens beobachten, zwischendurch in die Ostsee hüpfen – so hat Telse Himmel sich ihr neues Leben vorgestellt. Nachdem sie ihr altes Journalistinnen-Dasein in Hamburg hinter sich gelassen und das schmucke Gartenhaus ihrer Freundin, der vermögenden Witwe Wanda Holle, bezogen hat, freut sie sich auf ein bisschen Ruhe. Und schließlich machen sie eine Entdeckung, die sie niemals erwartet hätten.

Crime im Heim
Das Haus »Silberblick«, ein progressives Seniorenstift, braucht mehr Kultur! So sieht das zumindest der ehemalige Feuilletonchef und Heimbewohner Friedhelm Klemp und fasst die Inszenierung von »Hamlet« ins Auge. Unterstützt wird er von seiner vergeblich Angebeteten, Katia Horenfeld, dank derer sich eine bunte Truppe unterschiedlichster Charaktere zusammenrauft. Doch schon das erste Probentreffen wird von einer grausigen Tat begleitet: Ophelia, der Mops einer Darstellerin, wird tot aufgefunden. Das Ergebnis der Obduktion des Hundes, ausgeführt von einem pensionierten Zahnarzt mithilfe eines gräflichen Nageletuis, überrascht und entsetzt alle: Das Tier wurde erschossen. Also ein klarer Fall von Mord! Katia, der die Rolle von Hamlet zugedacht ist, soll auch die »Ermittlungen« durchführen. Dabei ergeben sich immer mehr Ungereimtheiten rund um die Tat. Während Katia noch überlegt, wie sie am besten vorgehen soll, taucht die nächste Leiche auf.
