Sustainability in Environmental Engineering and Science

Fixed Bed Hybrid Bioreactor
This book describes a simplified approach to the modelling and process design of a fixed bed hybrid bioreactor for wastewater treatment. In this work a simplified model for hybrid bioreactor is developed to determine output parameters like exiting substrate concentration in bulk liquid, average substrate flux in the biofilm, effective and total biofilm thickness. The model is based on mass balance of both carbonaceous substrate and biomass under suspended and attached growth simultaneously along with substrate mass transport into the biofilm. The proposed model has also been validated with the results obtained from experimental study with municipal wastewater considering as a low strength wastewater with no inhibition. There is a flexibility of the proposed model making it a versatile one to find out the exiting substrate concentration both in hybrid bioreactor as well as in a completely mixed biofilm reactor (CMBR). The book caters to academics and practitioners working in the field of advanced wastewater treatment.

I Spy with My Little Eye
Frustrated with the colonial policing and “spyarchy” that had taken over administration in Bengal, Humphry House wrote I Spy with My Little Eye in 1937. The satirical pamphlet features a fascinating cast of local characters: from Ilsa, a blonde saxophonist at the Continental Hotel, to a shape-shifting Brahmin who morphs into a police inspector. For the first time in over 80 years, this curious work is being reprinted with a new introduction, notes and material from the Humphry House archive. Humphry House (1908-1955) came to India in 1936 and joined Presidency College as Professor of English. He was suspected of being a spy and hounded by the colonial police. Soon after, he left Presidency to join Ripon College. House became a member of the Parichay group and frequented the adda-s where intellectuals, writers and scientists gathered.
Little Magazines in West Bengal
A few years ago, Bānlā little magazine reached the centenary of its origination. In Bengal (West Bengal and Bangladesh), the passion and enthusiasm about the little magazine supersedes that of Europe or America, but we are far behind the Western countries in terms of collection, preservation, and research of little magazines. The number of monographs or academic books on the Indian little magazine is too few, and such books in English are very rare. We believe that this book can remove that scarcity to some extent. The author of the present work has been closely associated with the movements of the little magazine as an author, editor, and organizer for no less than three decades. Those intimate experiences about such a kind of magazine are inscribed in this book. The text is not as dry as the research works used to be; anyone who is interested in Bānlā avant-garde magazines can enjoy this book.
