In 1952, there were probably fewer than 200 Baha'is in all of Africa. Today the Baha'i community claims one million followers on the continent. Yet, the Baha'i presence in Africa has been all but ignored in academic studies up to now. This is the first monograph that addresses the establishment of this New Religious Movement in Africa. Discovering an African presence at the genesis of the religon in Iran, this study seeks to explain why the movement found an appeal in colonial Africa during the 1950s and early 1960. It also explores how the Baha'i faith was influenced and Africanized by its new converts. Finally, the book seeks to make sense of the diverse and contradictory American, Iranian, British, and African elements that established a new religion in Africa.

The Diary of Juliet Thompson

This diary is the day by day account which Juliet Thompson, one of the early Bahá'ís of New York, kept of her many hours with 'Abdu'l-Bahá-first on pilgrimage to "Akká in 1909, then in Europe in 1911, and finally in America in 1912."Juliet is one of my favorites," 'Abdu'l-Bahá had said. His fatherly love for her - encouraging, comforting, guiding, warning, sometimes even chastising - is recorded, page by page. Juliet's love for 'Abdu'l-Bahá is also vividly kept here. To this divine love she devoted her life, becoming an immortal teacher of the Cause, serving faithfully until her death in 1956.This inspirational and surprisingly relatable story is a must read for every Baha'i seeking to understand the early believers' relationship with Abdu'l-Baha, and the qualities we all possess to help us in our effort to advance the Baha'i World Order.

Symbol and Secret

Here is the first full volume in English devoted to a study of the Kitáb-i Íqán, a book designated by the Guardian of the Bahá'í Faith as "foremost among the priceless treasures cast forth from the billowing ocean of Bahá'u'lláh's Revelation."Christopher Buck, a Bahá'í scholar of Islamic Studies, elucidates Bahá'u'lláh's explanations of the symbolic language found in the Qur'an and in the Gospels. Bahá'u'lláh offers new insight into the meanings of these verses, and Buck illustrates how through those meanings the Kitáb-i Íqán forms a bridge to a new Revelation.Through extensive research, Buck shares the history of the revelation of the Kitáb-i Íqán, the rhetorical techniques which Bahá'u'lláh uses in this work, and its early publication in India at Bahá'u'lláh's command. He also answers the attacks that non-Bahá'í critics have directed against it. A must-read for students of Bahá'í Scripture.

The Splendour Of God

Eric Hammond's 'The Splendour of God' beckons readers into a realm where the sacred and the secular intertwine, offering a unique and thought-provoking exploration of spirituality. In this enthralling book, Hammond embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries of the divine, presenting a tapestry of ideas that bridge the gap between faith and reason. Rather than approaching spirituality from a purely religious perspective, Hammond takes a refreshing approach by incorporating philosophical, scientific, and mystical insights. He seamlessly weaves together diverse strands of thought, inviting readers to contemplate the nature of existence, the purpose of life, and the interplay between humanity and the transcendent. 'The Splendour of God' is not a mere collection of abstract concepts; it is a transformative journey. By exploring the various dimensions of human experience, he invites readers to question their assumptions and transcend limitations, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of the divine. Throughout the book, Hammond draws upon a wide range of sources, from ancient wisdom traditions to modern scientific discoveries, to support his exploration.

Baha'i and Globalisation

Globalisation has become a buzzword that typically refers to the intensifying integration of the world economy, especially as midwifed by technological advances. It also implies a growing political and cultural sense that all humanity is globally interdependent. There have always been individuals of course who have advocated such awareness, one of them being the founder of the Baha'i faith, who formulated a spiritual equivalent as the religion's central doctrine in the late 19th century: Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. Its emphasis on global unification made Baha'i an obvious candidate for a case study on new religions and globalisation. The chapters in this volu...

The Brilliant Proof

In 1911, during Abdu'l-Baha's first visit to Britain, he was invited into churches and welcomed warmly by many Christian clergymen. This outraged more conservative Christian ministers, and an attack on the Baha'i Faith and its Central Figures was published in the journal Evangelical Christendom. When the article was shown to Mirza Abu'l-Fadl, the great Baha'i scholar immediately penned a reply. Abdu'l-Baha titled it The Brilliant Proof. Here, for the first time since its early printing, is Abu'l-Fadl's response, along with the original essay which sparked the controversy and a new foreword that provides historical context.
