Lo que nos interesa, por encima de todo, es el hombre Tomás, el intelectual Tomás; incluso, si se quiere, el santo Tomás; pero no, desde luego, un montón de doctrinas cosmológicas, antropológicas, morales, físicas, filosóficas y teológicas que llegaron a expresarse a través de su pluma en el siglo XIII. Tomás no fue para nada un fanático de lo tradicional ni un repetidor inmovilista de las soluciones ya trilladas. Tuvo abiertos los ojos a las realidades de su época, se percató de los problemas, se esforzó incluso en formularlos como tales y en ponderar las razones que avalaban las respuestas que a él le parecían equivocadas. Cuando expresa las soluciones propias, aquellas que le parecen apropiadas, equilibradas y valiosas, no considera haber dado una respuesta enteramente indiscutible, dogmáticamente defendible y válida desde todos los respectos, para todas las circunstancias y en todos los tiempos. Es más, suele considerar una tesis tanto más válida cuánto más haya tenido en cuenta los matices, las razones del opuesto y las excepciones previsibles. Sus soluciones pretenden siempre ser integradoras, matizadas, temperantes. Y además, novedosas.

Desire and Human Flourishing
This book discusses the concept of desire as a positive factor in human growth and flourishing. All human decision-making is preceded by some kind of desire, and we act upon desires by either rejecting or following them. It argues that our views on and expressions of desire in various facets of life and through time have differed according to how human beings are taught to desire.
