In diesem Buch wird die soziologische Differenzierungstheorie dazu genutzt, Öffentlichkeiten in unterschiedlichen sozialen Einheiten zu untersuchen und damit die Grundlage für eine allgemeine Theorie der Öffentlichkeit zu entwickeln. In jedem differenzierten Sozialgebilde, so die leitende These der Arbeit, entsteht der Bedarf nach einer öffentlichen Orientierungsebene. Da es sich aber nicht nur bei der modernen Gesellschaft, sondern zum Beispiel auch bei Organisationen und Familien um differenzierte soziale Einheiten handelt, müsste folglich auch von einer organisationsinternen oder einer familieninternen Öffentlichkeit gesprochen werden. In diesem Sinne kann Öffentlichkeit als pluralistische Kategorie verstanden werden.

Albert Carl Gottfried Griepp (1849-1921), together with his widowed mother, a brother and a sister, immigrated from Germany to Cedarburg, Wisconsin in 1871. He married Anna Ernestina Ruth Henke in 1877, and moved to Bonduel, Wisconsin. Descendants lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and elsewhere.
