The Arithmetic of Polynomial Dynamical Pairs

New mathematical research in arithmetic dynamics In The Arithmetic of Polynomial Dynamical Pairs, Charles Favre and Thomas Gauthier present new mathematical research in the field of arithmetic dynamics. Specifically, the authors study one-dimensional algebraic families of pairs given by a polynomial with a marked point. Combining tools from arithmetic geometry and holomorphic dynamics, they prove an “unlikely intersection” statement for such pairs, thereby demonstrating strong rigidity features for them. They further describe one-dimensional families in the moduli space of polynomials containing infinitely many postcritically finite parameters, proving the dynamical André-Oort conjecture for curves in this context, originally stated by Baker and DeMarco. This is a reader-friendly invitation to a new and exciting research area that brings together sophisticated tools from many branches of mathematics.

Blind to Evil

Blind to Evil Amos Mead is on special assignment for the CIA in Columbia, South America. He is accompanied by his wife, Doctor Brigit Mead on a mission to establish that Arabs are being smuggled into the Americas by drug cartels. They discover that unseen forces are at work. Good forces or evil forces? Suspicions, hunches, feelings? Need to know and soon. The President of the United States is under the influence of people who flatter him and color his thinking to their world view. He is enamored with the idea of befriending bad actors in the world to influence them to be good citizens. The terror group PLO is in his favor. But another group lurks with even more evil aims. He is so naïve that he is blind to them-until they strike. People die. Americans. A battle is fought. The government is frozen in its beliefs. Someone must step up and face reality. To defend the country. Someone does.

Moral Philosophy on the Threshold of Modernity

Over the past twenty years the transition from the late Middle Ages to the early modern era has received increasing attention from experts in the history of philosophy. In part, this new interest arises from claims, made in literature aimed at a less specialist readership, that this transition was responsible for the subsequent philosophical and theological problems of the Enlightenment. Philosophers like Alasdair MacIntyre and theologians like John Milbank display a certain nostalgia for the medieval synthesis of Thomas Aquinas and, consequently, evaluate the period from 1300 to 1700 in rather negative terms. Other historians of philosophy writing for the general public, such as Charles Tay...

Nazi master spy Otto Hauptmann works for one of them. Into the mix is thrown another spy - suspected to be a U.S. military officer, also on the Nazi espionage mission. Thus, Mead and company are challenged from many directions. The chase begins in Berlin and London, passes through North and South America, and ends in the South Pacific, 300 miles from Fiji.Along the way, an old love interest reappears, unusual alliances are formed, highest levels of government provide clandestine support, people are lost and found, and the culmination of the race twists in unsuspected ways.

A Voyage Beyond Reason

He Dared to Dream an Impossible Dream. He Risked Body and Soul to Make it Real. On September 13, 1996, twenty four year old Benjamin Wade set out on a solo voyage in a tiny sea kayak. As he pushed off from the shores of San Felipe, his goal lay 6,000 miles away-and deep within his own soul. The chance discovery of his journals, buried on a Colombian cliff above the sea, uncovered a mystery which took many years to finally solve. His journals tell of misery and elation, of triumph and failure, of insight and insanity. Follow the events which will forge his character, and follow the mind of a young man set on achieving a dream that no amount of misfortune can dissuade him from reaching . . . on a journey that challenges his survival, and brings him face to face with himself. Tom Gauthier weaves the word pictures and intimate thoughts of Benjamin Wade into a gripping story of the struggle for survival and the reshaping of a young life in a way that few of us could imagine.
