The Impact of Stress on Cognition and Motivation
Stress has a broad impact on animals’ behavior, profoundly affects brain regions involved on cognition and motivation and, when maladaptive, is also a trigger for neuropsychiatric disorders. This book focuses on advances in understanding how stressful events impact cognition and motivation, and the neural mechanisms that mediate their effects. Additionally, this book seeks to highlight the most recent efforts to identify individual factors that can alter an organism’s response to stressful stimuli, and to describe pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that can mitigate the deleterious effects of stress on cognition and motivation.
The Metaphysics of Resurrection in Seventeenth-Century Philosophy
This book provides a new account of the emergence of the philosophy of personal identity in the early modern period. Reflection on personal identity is often thought to have begun in earnest with John Locke’s famous consciousness-based account, published in the 2nd Edition of the Essay in 1694. The Life and Theology of Alexander Knox
In his The Life and Theology of Alexander Knox, David McCready highlights one of the most important figures in the history of Anglicanism. A disciple of John Wesley, Knox presents his mentor as a representative of the Neo-Platonic tradition within Anglicanism, a tradition that Knox himself also exemplifies. Knox also significantly impacted John Henry Newman and the Tractarians. But Alexander Knox is an important theologian in his own right, one who engaged substantially with the main intellectual currents of his day, namely those stemming from the Enlightenment and Romanticism. Relates the biography of Rabbi Soloveitchik of Brisk (then in Poland), including the suffering of his community, his family, and other Jews under the Nazis and under the Soviets, whose threat to the souls of Jews, as part of their general militant atheism, was considered more serious than the Nazi threat to Jewish bodies. Ch. 9 (p. 351-391), "Surviving World War II", includes descriptions of efforts to carry on with Jewish religious life under German occupation in 1939. Soloveitchik fled to Warsaw and then to Vilna, under Soviet control. Ch. 10 (p. 392-476), "In Vilna, the 'Jerusalem of Lithuania'", depicts Jewish suffering under the alternating German and Soviet occupations, including a pogrom by Lithuanians. While Soloveitchik succeeded in fleeing from Soviet rule to Eretz Israel, his wife and three of his children remained in Brisk. Ch. 13 (p. 535-576), "The Fate of the Jews of Brisk", recounts the liquidation of the ghetto there, where Soloveitchik's dear ones apparently perished.
