Leaving Readers Behind
The American newspaper industry is in the middle of the most momentous change in its entire three-hundred-year history. A generation of relentless "corporatization" has resulted in a furious, unprecedented blitz of buying, selling, and consolidation of newspapers, accompanied by dramatic -- and drastic -- change in reporting and coverage of all kinds. Concerned that this phenomenon was going largely unreported, Gene Roberts, legendary reporter and editor, decided to undertake a huge, extended reportorial study of his own industry, what would become the Project on the State of the American Newspaper. Gathering more than two dozen distinguished journalists and writers, Roberts produced a long series of reports in the American Journalism Review, published by the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism, asking the crucial question: Are American communities -- in the very middle of the so-called information explosion -- in danger of becoming less informed than ever?
Sentinels of History
Sentinels of History was conceived of as a way to mark the turn of the millennium by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. This generously illustrated book contains thirty-nine essays, each of which showcases an important Arkansas site and is written by a noted authority. Also included is a location map for these sites and a full appendix providing location information, county by county, for the more than two thousand surviving properties in Arkansas (as of June 1999) that appear on the National Register. The essays are as wide-ranging as Roger Kennedy's placement of the Toltec Mounds at the time of Charlemagne, Donald Harington's sensitive look at the "bigeminal" architecture of the Wolf dogtrot cabin, and Neil Compton's egalitarian tribute to the Boxley Valley Historic District on the Buffalo National River. At least one current color photo of the site and one historic image are included with each essay. In addition, illustrations of the locations or structures listed in the appendix are scattered throughout sections. In all, Sentinels of History serves as a lavish inventory of historic properties in Arkansas at the end of the twentieth century.

Germantown During the Civil War Era

Für den "Tag der offenen Tür" am 4.11.2017 im "Haus der Familie" in Katzenelnbogen hatte auch das Team der Bücherei für den Einrich eingeladen, wo sich leselustige Leute jeden Alters zu einem regen Gedankenaustausch und natürlich zum Stöbern in den Bücherregalen einfanden. Auch ich war dabei mit meinen Büchern, Manuskripten und der derzeitigen Bettlektüre über Psychopathen und Co., die von den Gästen neugierig in Augenschein genommen wurden. Besonders viel Spaß machte an diesem Tage die gemeinsame Arbeit an der Flipchart, wo der interessierte Gast die Möglichkeit hatte, an einer neuen Kriminalgeschichte mitzuwirken.
