Here is a wealth of factual and interpretative information about Germany between 1918 and 1945. Designed for maximum practicality, it sets the Hitler years in their wider context, with most sections spanning the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazism as well as the Third Reich itself. In addition to political chronologies and anatomies of the Nazi party and the police state, there is detailed information on economy, society and culture; diplomacy, rearmament and war; and racial politics and the Holocaust. Biographies, glossary and a rich annotated bibliography complete an invaluable study aid.

The Longman Companion to Nazi Germany

Here is a wealth of factual and interpretative information about Germany, and German society, economy and culture, between 1918 and 1945. Tim Kirk's primary concern is with the Hitler years, but he sets them in their wider context throughout: wherever appropriate, the sections span the Weimar Republic and the rise of Nazism as well as the Third Reich itself, to illuminate the many continuities in Germany - as well as the obvious changes - on either side of the political dividing line. Purely as a compilation this is a formidable achievement. Its usefulness is greatly enhanced by Tim Kirk's admirably level-headed commentary, whether it is guiding the reader through the everyday domesticities of ordinary people before the war or the mounting horrors of the Third Reich at bay. The result (which includes information not otherwise available in English) is an invaluable study aid, within the confines of a single volume of manageable size, to a subject that, half a century on, has lost nothing of its baleful fascination.

Nazi Germany

Hitler's 'thousand-year Reich' lasted barely longer than twelve brief and inglorious years, and yet had an impact on millions of ordinary lives scarcely comparable with any other episode in modern European history. Nazi Germany examines the origins and development of Nazism, the establishment of the dictatorship and the impact on Germany's economy, society and culture of the regime's single-minded drive towards war and genocide. The view from above, reflected in the movement's ideology, policy and legislation is complemented by the many, often conflicting, views from below, as described in the reports smuggled out of Germany by Socialist dissidents or overheard by the regime's spies and poli...

Nazi Germany

Nazi Germany is a succinct general study of the origins and development of the Nazi dictatorship, its impact on Germany and Europe and its consequences for our understanding of German and European history. Tim Kirk focuses on the relationship between Nazism and German society, and covers a number of important and controversial themes, including the social base of Nazism, the role of Hitler in the party and the Third Reich, the impact of Nazism on the everyday lives of ordinary Germans and the relationship between Nazi racial and eugenic policies and the Holocaust. He also examines the role of Hitler and Nazi ideology in the development of German foreign policy and concludes with a review of the many different interpretations and explanations of Nazism.
